Thinking about getting this sofa for our living room to help with people staying over etc. Wondering if anyone has experience with it especially in the Performance Velvet fabric. Quality? Still holding up after X amount of years? Much appreciated!

Thinking about getting a West Elm sleeper sofa for my place. What do you all think about their mattresses? Any good?

I went to their outlet near me and liked the sofas, but wasn’t able to try the mattress itself.

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I are in the process of purchasing new furniture for our condo. We found a sleeper sofa (Harris Queen Sofa Bed) at West Elm (https://www.westelm.ca/harris-sleeper-sofa-h4615?quantity=1&attribute_2=Performance%20Velvet%2C%20Lagoon), but are reluctant to pull the trigger due to all of the complaints we have been reading online regarding West Elm's quality.

Are the quality issues mostly related to products that are imported? I noticed this couch is assembled in the USA. What has your experience been like with their USA made sofas?

I'm looking for a sleeper sectional, ideally with a black friday/cyber monday discount. Anyone have any experience/opinions on:

Crate and Barrel Barrett II: https://www.crateandbarrel.com/barrett-ii-91-reversible-storage-chaise-lounge-queen-sleeper-sectional-sofa/s573786

Crate and Barrel Lounge: https://www.crateandbarrel.com/lounge-93-reversible-storage-chaise-lounge-queen-sleeper-sectional-sofa/s626642?oc=1%2C402

West Elm Harris: https://www.westelm.com/products/harris-sleeper-sectional-w-terminal-chaise-h4588/?pkey=sWE&sb=WE

West Elm Dominick: https://www.westelm.com/products/dominick-2-piece-sleeper-sectional-h13297/?pkey=cfurniture&sb=WE

I also looked at Interior Define in store today and almost bought but went home a researched and saw lots of bad reviews about shipping times and customer service so decided against it.

Any thoughts are helpful. I wanted to stay in the $2-3K range. Although we want a sleeper for occasional guests, we are not planning to use it extremely often so we prioritize the sofa over the bed. Thanks!

r/furniture on Reddit: Best sleeper sofa with comfortable mattress?
December 27, 2020 -

I'm moving soon and would like to get a pull-out sleeper sofa that has a comfortable mattress for guests. A comfortable sleeping experience is my number one criteria, because this will be in my basement family room. Ideally, the mattress would be on the firmer side because I know my parents like that. I also wouldn't want anything where the mattress is too thin, or has springs or a bar that poke someone on it. So I'm thinking memory foam is best, and thicker is better, although I'm open to suggestions if anyone thinks that's not the way to go. The style/appearance of the couch itself is less important to me, although of course, it's better to look nice than not. Comfort while in couch mode matters, but not as important for me as when the mattress is pulled out. I'd also like something that is going to last a long time. For price, lower is better of course, but anything up to around $2500 might be considered. (Unless someone thinks it's impossible to get what I'm looking for for that price.) I want queen size only, and pull-out only.

I'm struggling to find reviews that seem to be independent, or that adequately focus on mattress comfort. I'd love to see a comparison that focused on 5-10 different brands of pull-out sofas that focused on mattress comfort, but I haven't seen one.

One that I'm looking at closely is the West Elm Shelter Queen Sleeper Sofa. But has anyone actually tried the mattress? Also, I've read mixed things about West Elm quality, and I would want this to last. https://www.westelm.com/products/shelter-sleeper-sofa-h1891/

Another option is the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa. It looks nice and the mattress seems to be comfortable, but I've read nightmare reviews of the Joybird experience, so I'm not sure what to think.https://joybird.com/sleeper-sofas/briar-sleeper-sofa/

Another option is the Room&Board Berin Queen Sleeper Sofa in Fabric. I've read good things, and supposedly it's made by American Leather, which is also supposedly good. But most of what I've read on this is years old, so I don't know if the quality has changed. It's also more expensive than I'd like. But if this is the most affordable good option, I'd consider it. https://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/living/sleeper-sofas/berin-wide-arm-day-and-night-sleeper-sofas/10010148

One more option I found is the Wayfair Jennifer 81'' Genuine Leather Rolled Arm Sofa. It got a pretty good review on the Spruce website (not sure how independent that is), and I like that it's real leather and is the most affordable one on this list. But it's a spring mattress, and the price is almost too good to be true. Also, the delivery time is far off, which isn't ideal, although I'd take a long delivery for the right couch. https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/jennifer-genuine-leather-81-rolled-arm-sofa-bed-cstm2402.html?st=1

Any suggestions for a specific couch or brand? Or ideas for how to shop around?

If it's relevant, I'm in the United States, in the DC metro area.

July 9, 2023 -

Hey all, I bought a 6 month used, very good condition shelter sleeper sofa. After about 2 months we have some issues that I'm wondering if others have or know of a fix.

  1. The bench seat seems awfully soft and saggy in the middle away from the edges. I'm wondering if the bed isn't sitting back in to the couch correctly since it seems about an inch + difference from the middle of the seat cushion to the sides where the couch frame is. Or perhaps this is normal and you have a suggestion on adding additional fill to the insert to compensate. Or what about a hard board of some sort to place under the cushion?

  2. The frame is the bed squeaks quite a bit when sitting on the couch when it's stored. should I just be trying to lubricate the frame? it's hard to tell where it squeaks when it's pulled out.

Thanks for any thoughts and info! Jesse

Anyone have experience with the West Elm Haven Sofa? I'm looking for a sleeper sofa but. I don't want to compromise comfort, a lot of sleepers are stiff and firm. Anyone purchase the West Elm Haven sofa? I like the style and ability to customize but curious on how it sits and if the sofa holds up after some time.

Hey. We need a new sectional. Family of four including two older kids, plus two cats. We're on a tight tight budget and are avid Craigslister/Marketplace furniture shoppers with mostly positive outcomes. Can't afford new right now, but have been shopping for something "like new" that ticks most of the boxes - modern aesthetic, comfort, the right dimensions, etc.

I had been planning to buy a 1-year old West Elm Urban sectional this weekend off Craigslist. It doesn't even look like anyone has sat on it (obviously I would make a judgement once I saw it in person).

Then I read alllllll the hundreds of WE horror stories. Now I have second thoughts.

My question: Even if you wouldn't buy one at full price, would you pull the trigger for 65% off retail, and is it a fair expectation that it will hold up for four to five years?

Does anyone have first-hand experience with local options?

I'm looking for one now, and my only real reference point is the pull-out couch with a thin mattress I used to sleep on as a kid in the 90's that I remember is not particularly comfortable. A few parameters:

  • Budget is soft $2000

  • Looking for something less than 70 in wide; this i think limits me to a twin size

  • Can accommodate a 200 lbs person

Some local options I've familiarized myself with:

  • Crate & Barrel, West Elm, and Room & Board: they all have some newer sleeper "tech" like fold-out designs, but mostly designed for larger spaces.

  • Burrow: just one option, not small enough

  • Joybird: a lot of options, but i think i only saw pull-outs

  • Bob's Discount: not enough options and all for larger spaces

  • IKEA: A few options, but built for small and light users unlike me

Some online retailers have tempting prices, but afaik there's no way to see them in person:

  • Wayfair carries some fold-out Serta-branded sleepers

  • Article has this piece, something like that i think could work for me

Very well made and SUPER comfy for guests to sleep on, as it uses the American Leather mechanism instead of the regular sleeper sofa steel bar contraptions that companies like West Elm use :)

r/BuyItForLife on Reddit: Sleeper Sofa Recommendation
June 20, 2025 -

I’m looking to replace the current couch in our guest room/my office with a sleeper sofa, so we don’t have to bring out the uncomfortable air mattress when we have guests sleep over. Would love some recommendations and/or reviews on what sleeper sofa to NOT buy.

Here’s the requirements I’m looking for:

  1. Couch width: around 80”, anything longer than 85” is way too long for the space. (Doesn’t matter if it’s full or queen once it’s in bed form)

  2. Budget: under $2000 (after tax and delivery)

  3. Preferably leather or a fabric that’s easy to clean and water resistant like performance velvet. I don’t really have a style preference

  4. Preferably in pull-out bed style or pop out mattress style. I don’t really like the look of a futon, I also slept on a futon as my main bed for like 3 years as a child so maybe I have PTSD

  5. Preferably be able to see the couch in stores but not required

  6. Bonus points: if it has some type of storage

I was eyeing the Ikea Morabo sleeper in leather for a while, but it’s 87” and that would be too long. I am currently looking at the West Elm Whitman Trundle and it’s a good length and I got a swatch of their performance velvet, and it’s water resistant and can be easily cleaned. But the West Elm stores in Washington don’t have that couch, and I’m not able to find any review or videos of it other than the official product photos, so I’m kinda reluctant to drop $1600+ on it.

I’ve seen a lot of good leather sleepers that meet my criteria but they’re all so ridiculously expensive, and I know it may not be possible to find a couch that meet those criteria, but if there is one that meets 1 and 2 then I would still consider it, if it comes to that. Thank you!!!

May 28, 2020 - I have a West Elm Andes chaise sectional and love it. Also have a couple of other pieces from them that are keepers. That said, my experience with them has been very hit or miss. Aforementioned sectional arrived 2 months late, one delay after another ... I have had the Andes sleeper sofa with microfiber and it has lasted 15 years.

June 2, 2024 - Hi! I've been looking into purchasing the West Elm Harmony Modular 2-Piece Chaise Sectional and then I realized that they make a sleeper sofa version that has a storage chaise, which would be great for my small apartment. Has anyone tried that version? My worry is that the quality won't be as good, like maybe the seats won't feel as sturdy because there's a hollow space under them that the bed is stored in.

r/furniture on Reddit: Is west elm worth the price?
May 23, 2021 -

We are about to pull the trigger on some West Elm furniture. It’s a lot of money and I’ve done all the research I can. It seems like west elm is worth the price from what I’ve seen but I figured I’d ask here too.

We are looking at getting the shelter sleeper sofa for my office so we have room for guests.

We are looking for the mid century leather dining chair.

We have a 2.5 year old so having everything be easy to clean is a must. The sofa won’t be in the toddler’a reach most of the time.

Is it worth it? What else should I consider? Thanks in advance!

So I can't speak to the quality of the sleeper sofa, but we do have bedroom furniture from West Elm as well as a "cozy swivel chair." I really like the cozy swivel chair--it is, indeed, cozy and also stylish to boot, albeit not extremely well made. The bedroom furniture, I'm a little less into. I mean, it all looks good from a distance or in a photo, but the veneer is kinda cheap and it hasn't worn well in the 4 or so years we've had it . For the price, I wish we'd gone in a different direction. As for easy to clean, that is probably more on the fabric than the manufacturer per se. I don't know if the shelter sofa can come in performance fabrics, but with a toddler in the mix, that's probably worth the extra cost.

I've ordered four pieces from West Elm. I'm never shopping there again. Their response to COVID has been to lie to their customers and to lie on their website, continually making empty promises. I ordered a bed, a coffee table, a side table, and a TV stand in November and December of 2020. The original delivery dates ranged from late December to mid January. Fair enough. I then proceeded to receive months of delays, delays, delays. I called, emailed, they kept saying they were just waiting on one piece, just waiting on it to go through processing at the warehouse. I ended up getting the bed in March, the side table in April, and the coffee table in May. I'm still waiting on the TV stand. Their newest delivery estimate is in early July. The kicker? Their website says the TV stand is in stock and available. They're full of shit. Bottom line: Don't ever buy from West Elm. P.S. The quality is garbage. The side table's drawer barely goes in and out since it's poorly made and has crazy friction. The coffee table has a rising section to use as a table while sitting at the couch, kind of like a TV tray built in. It never lays flat when I push it into the coffee table. One side is constantly about an inch higher than the other, and won't lay flush with the rest of the table, adding this slant to half the table. Quality is garbage, customer service / delivery is garbage. Worst investments I've ever made.

I was enthusiastic about the place, like people say it's the next step up from Ikea for most people. It's probably about the most I can afford too.

But lately I was reading about their quality -- I'm looking for a sofa. I thought for that kind of money I'd be getting something durable. I'm talking at least 5 years of use. But there's this article:

https://www.buzzfeed.com/leticiamiranda/west-elms-quality-issues-dont-stop-at-peggygate?utm_term=.hfPANpybv#.dblYD8X0n

One of the most absurd things in there is West Elm employees saying their sofas should last 1-3 years with light use. I mean, that's absurd. That's a laugh line.

Any experiences with their quality?

We have a brand new Harris Sleeper sofa from West Elm that refuses to budge open. Has anyone experienced this? We have West Elm coming out on the 21st but have family arriving on the 23rd so I am pretty nervous about this.

Is there something I am missing? Has anyone else experienced this? I removed a tie that was connected to the handle bar but can't see anything else. Yes, I pulled it in and then outward motion. Actually tried all the motions. I just don't want to break it. Halp!!

*Tie that is pictured is stapled into the inside of the sofa and not tied to anything.
