I plan to attend the BSc in Computer Science at WGU and I have no prior college credits to provide so far. I know it can be solved by taking open credit courses (I'll probably pick Saylor Academy since it is the cheapest option). I'll definitely pick a course of calculus as it is a requirement for Computer Science. However I have no idea of how many other classes are required to be admitted. I wouldn't want to take 10 courses if 3 are enough, especially because the class of calculus alone at Saylor Academy is said to take 122 hours. Does anyone know the minimum number of credits that I should provide to WGU to be admitted?
Other options: certifications. I know that they are not required for the BS in CS. But I’ve read on Reddit that an IT certif can replace college credits in the admission process. So Calculus class + IT certif. = guaranteed acceptance in CS?

For BSCS, the only requirement is a precalculus or calculus course. You don't need any certifications or other courses.

I just went through this process this morning. I'll give you the rundown in case you haven't spoken to anyone yet. WGU academy is $150 a month and is soft-gated by a 1 month cohort with required video meetings. So, no matter what, it'll take you at least one month. You take pre-calc, English, you cohort, and at LEAST one other additional class of your choosing between things like statistics, general chem, or MTA certificates. I talked to my advisor originally about CLEP testing through Calc but finally settled for WGU Academy because the other courses transfer too! If a course offered by WGU Acad is also on your regular WGU syllabus then the credits will transfer completely. So, in a way, you aren't only getting the value of the prequisite but also additional credits if you have the time to invest and knock out a fee easy low level courses!

How is the WGU cs program?
It’s not a rigorous program, which allows people to graduate and end up being clueless in interviews like u/fake-bird-123 described. It’s too easy to do the bare minimum to pass a class and move on without trying to actually learn the material. If you actually put in effort into studying for the courses and making some side projects to apply what you learned, you’ll be prepared for a new grad role. I did that along with interview prep, and was able to land a big tech job right after graduating from WGU. It’s a great option if you’re very self-motivated, and don’t mind having to figure out a lot of stuff by yourself. The low tuition cost is nice too. More on reddit.com

I'm a WGU grad, and I don't regret it. I never had anyone question my degree. I've had several internships and no issues getting interviews/callbacks. Mind you, I was completely new to the software dev space. but I will tell you it's not for everyone. I chose wgu because I had no interest in the college experience. I was already a working adult and got my fill when I went for my associates degree in person. For a younger person, in person learning is much more valuable. You can make life-long friends in person school and networking opportunities are much more abundant. Also, learning from a computer can be very isolating and difficult. As a working adult, WGU checked the box. I don't regret in person school. I had fun, and the classes were interesting, but WGU made more sense for what I needed it for it. More on reddit.com

It’s great that you took the time to write all of that out for the group. I’m sure it will reassure many people. As @rednoodles mentioned, WGU’s BSCS is ABET accredited, so the comparisons might be unnecessary. I think it is also important to recognize that CS is a broad field and not everyone wants to be programmers at FAANG businesses. There are many who aspire to work in other areas of CS (for instance, there are many who have indicated that they are interested in data science and want the CS degree because the Data Analytics degree doesn’t have enough of the foundation they need for DS).
