“Hamilton” — About Alexander and Eliza’s Last Goodbye | Timeless
Still, much of the play really is based on history, particularly the 2004 Ron Chernow biography “Alexander Hamilton,” which, in turn, draws in part on Library documents. This brings us to one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the play, in which Alexander says goodbye to his beloved wife Eliza for the last time. Although Eliza destroyed nearly all of their letters before she died (perhaps the inspiration for the “I’m erasing myself from the narrative,” line she says in the play), some letters do survive.

r/hamiltonmusical on Reddit: Eliza Was so Ride or Die
June 8, 2020 -

20 years after the death of her husband, Alexander Hamilton, Eliza refused to receive James Monroe at the end of his presidency. She still bore a grudge over what she thought was his shoddy treatment of Hamilton.

There are a lot of little stories I've come across like that, she really did work to make sure her husband's legacy wouldn't be tarred by his political enemies who wanted to paint him as an ambitious social climber or worse.

The moment in the musical where she takes his hand and says "It's quiet uptown," is, I think, the most accurate portrayal of Eliza Hamilton we'll ever see. She honestly, sincerely forgives him. She forgives him for the Reynolds Affair. She forgives him for writing and publishing the pamphlet. She forgives him for neglecting his family for his ambition. She forgives him for however much he was responsible for their son's death. It's deep and insane forgiveness. I'll be honest, I think its a depth of forgiveness that normal human beings are not capable of.

He dies, and she fights for his legacy. She works to make his dreams reality. She holds a grudge until she herself dies against someone who she felt wronged her husband.

Look up "Loyalty" in the dictionary. If there isn't a picture of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, you need to get out the glue and fix that.
