First thing I would do is look for pictures from previous events if available to scope out the level of formality the host is expecting. Black tie usually means a long dress or gown but if it’s a less formal interpretation of black tie you’d get away with a smarter cocktail dress. Stick to monochrome and palette colours. Don’t go overboard, it’s not white tie.

It depends where you're going. Black tie means different things to different organisations. It should be a long dress but you may be able to get away with mid-calf. You should also have something covering your shoulders, so a small sleeve or a wrap. Basically not short and not strappy.
