Not all USB-C ports support video output. You should check the specifications on your particular model.

Only USB-C port with USB 3.1 or above version can stream video.

r/UsbCHardware on Reddit: USB-C to HDMI suddenly stopped working
September 27, 2023 -

I have been using an HDMI cable + HDMI to USB-C adapter to connect two monitors to my laptop. My main monitor is directly plugged in to the HDMI-socket, and the USB-C adapter to the only USB-C socket on the laptop. It's been working flawlessly until yesterday. Now the second monitor just displays "No HDMI signal" and goes to sleep mode. It does not even recognize me plugging in the USB-C cable. Take note that I've done zero (0, nil, no) changes to my setup.

Naturally I thought that the adapter was faulty since I did some testing with the USB-C socket (it charged my iPhone), and the HDMI-cable was working. Purchased a new HDMI to USB-C cable but to no avail.

On my laptop the device manager shows my monitor as a "BillBoard Service".

Has anyone run into this problem? Google is not my friend in this matter, even though I am a man of lurking the internet. Can someone point me in the right direction here?

Many thanks.

Edit: Okay so it got solved by turing the laptop off, then holding the on button for 30 seconds and letting go. What this triggered I have no idea but it might help someone out.

This is the first post I've found with this problem! I have the same set-up; a Dell laptop with HDMI port and two USB-C ports. HDMI port connects to an external monitor, one USB-C connects to a power supply, the other to an external monitor with a USB-C to HDMI cable. The USB-C ports are interchangeable as to function. This works fine most of the time, but sometimes when I boot it, the USB-C-connected monitor doesn't get a signal. "Display Settings" shows all 3 displays, but the misbehaving one is shown smaller, and listed as "Disconnect this display". Changing the dropdown box doesn't work. It won't change from "Disconnect this display". This only seems to happen at boot time. I've switched monitors, switched USB-C ports, even bought a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, but the issue pops up randomly anyway, so I'm pretty sure it is not a hardware problem. Most days it works fine, but some days it just doesn't. This is a work-issued laptop, on which I do NOT have administrator privileges, so updating drivers or mucking with the BIOS is out of the question. Since it isn't reliably reproducible, and I work from home, getting the company's IT department involved would be an exercise in futility. The only ways I've found to fix it are to reboot, or to superstitiously flip the USB-C connector over a time or two. I am a software engineer and electronics technician, so I have some small expertise. I believe the display driver is to blame, but I can't prove anything. I think there's some boot-time sequence that doesn't always go just right. FWIW, my display adapter shows as Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics, Driver Version 31.0.101.3959. It's very frustrating and annoying when it happens, but I don't have any better solution than this.

Dude, I had the exact same problem and I tried your solution and it worked! Thank you so much! Now I’m curious what caused it as well. I know I recently updated my GeForce drivers so maybe after certain updates you have to do a hard reset?

Windows version: 10.0.19044 Build 19044

Hardware: Lenovo laptop with 1650ti Nvidia & AMD Ryzen 5 4600H (AMD Radeon Graphics)

Recent softwares: I have used "SpaceDesk" a software used to share your pc screen to you apple device. (I have deleted it)

The problem: I'm trying to connect a WORKING(checked) screen with WORKING(checked) hdmi cable to my laptop. But the pc won't even see it being connected. It has worked in the past many times, before i had downloaded the "spacedesk" software.

What have i tried: I have look at almost every single video/posts/forums i could find, tried everything in order, tried to connect with another hdmi cable, tried to use another screen, software updates, command lines for fixing broken windows softwares, checking for driver updates (all graphics are up to date), i suspect the "spacedesk" is my problem, but i don't know why it doesn't still work after deleting it.

Last thing i want to do is recovery, i don't have the energy or the time to find & collect & store all of my personal files just to fix a problem that shouldn't be here. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advence.

EDIT: Nothing worked, i guess the port is broken. Going to send it for repair. I don't know how a hdmi port just stops working while not using it.

Hi Mridul karat palliyath,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that your USB-C HDMI connector is not working properly. It sounds like you have a driver issue or a hardware compatibility problem. Here are some possible solutions that might help you fix the error:

Fix USB-C problems in Windows - Microsoft Support

Error codes in Device Manager in Windows - Microsoft Support

  1. Update Drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your USB-C HDMI connector. Sometimes, compatibility issues can be resolved by updating or reinstalling the device drivers. Visit the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for your specific device and operating system.
  2. USB Port: Try using a different USB-C port on your computer. Some USB-C ports might have different capabilities, and using a different port could potentially resolve the issue.
  3. Firmware Update: Some devices, especially USB-C adapters, may require firmware updates to ensure proper functionality. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your USB-C HDMI connector and follow the manufacturer's instructions to update it.
  4. Uninstall and Reinstall Drivers: In the Device Manager, you can try uninstalling the problematic drivers, disconnect the USB-C HDMI connector, restart your computer, and then reconnect the adapter. Windows might automatically reinstall the drivers, potentially resolving any conflicts.
  5. Disconnect Other USB Devices: Disconnect any unnecessary USB devices from your computer. Sometimes, conflicts can arise when multiple USB devices are connected simultaneously.

Remember to back up your important data before making any significant changes to your system. It's also a good idea to test the USB-C HDMI connector on another computer to further isolate the issue and determine whether the problem is specific to your computer.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Your Sincerely

Hahn - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
