Durock, Hardie or Wonderboard? | DIY Home Improvement Forum
If you are going to to use a waterproofer (redguard/aquadefense) on the cement board, a lot of folks get that wrong. You need to make sure it's the proper thickness, otherwise it doesn't protect against moisture penetration. Use a wet-film thickness gauge. One benefit of wonderboard is the light version is much lighter...

r/DIY on Reddit: Hardie backer or wonderboard?
October 3, 2020 -
What’s the difference? Always used hardie backer.
What’s the difference between 1/4” and 1/2”?
Also, under the removed tiles on the ground, is some sort of thin plywood (which is on top of 3/4” plywood). Do I have to remove it or can I apply the hardie backer right on top? Mortar between wood and hardie backer?

I just remodeled both my guest bath and master bath. Did a ton of research before so here we go. I used 1/4 hardie backer. This gave me the correct height for the transition. The thin plywood you’re seeing under the tile is called underlayment. That’s what your hardie backer is. If it’s in good condition (not moisture damaged) and flat, mortar over it and lay hardie backer. If it’s damaged and warped, I would remove. The 3/4 plywood is the subfloor. This is what’s screwed to your floor joists. It’s also likely installed under wall studs. You will most likely not have to replace this. Your underlayment should have absorbed any water damage. Lay a mortar bed on either the existing underlayment or subfloor. Lay the hardie backer down and secure it with screws every 8” inches. There are marks on the hardie backer to make this easy. Place joint tape where the pieces meet and mortar over (thin). Good luck! For the love of god, wear knee pads please.

I was taught 1/2 was for walls (less flex) and 1/4 for floors. But usually end up using what is best for smoothest floor (no step down\up). I like to put some felt paper down and\or paint the plywood subfloor once its all cleaned up for the next time it gets renovated. No mortar between hardi and plywood only special screws that ly flush. Hardibacker is gypsum based and wonderboard cement I think. Different Tilers have their personal preferences. Hardibacker is slightly nicer to work with IMO but slightly heavier if I recall. More oldschool tilers are in the wonderboard camp. They like to mix their own mortar and chain smoke. Their kneecaps are basically fused.

How Do Different Tile Backer Boards Compare? | Networx
December 23, 2012 - It seems that building officials now agree. An added bonus to cement board use is its resistance to mold growth. That old green board was still paper-based and mold loves to eat paper. ... Permabase is National Gypsum’s product and it is very much like WonderBoard from Custom Building Products.

Wonderboard or Hardibacker? - Fine Homebuilding
April 26, 2005 - Screwed cement board 8" on center throughout. ... I just spent some time on the Hardibacker site in order to get their final word on a nailing scedule. Turns out that they are recommending 8" spacing on conventional 16" center stud bays. So I'm going to skip the addition of furring strips or sistering studs (yes I AM getting lazy). Thanks to all for the great insights and the pretty consistent bias for Hardibacker over Wonderboard...
