I have heard that "You guys" is more common in the northern part of the U.S., and "Y'all" is more common in the southern part of the U.S. However, I have seen New Yorkers say "Y'all" as well.

There is no "better" expression. They mean the same thing. In some contexts, "Y'all" would be considered more colloquial than "you guys." I can't speak to the UK usage. The specific expression "you guys" can be used for women. It's a gender-neutral term. But note that "guy" as a regular noun is exclusively masculine.

Y'all is mostly in the southern US, but can show up other places. It's just not common. It's short for "you all." "You guys" can include women, unless you're specifying the women separately as well. For example "you guys go right, and you girls go left." Both "y'all" and "you guys" came around because in modern English "you" can be singular or plural. Hundreds of years ago it was only plural and the singular form was "thou."
