I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I only figured it out last night so I figured I'd share for those who aren't aware of how to do it.
If you've ever tried to copy and paste a bunch of keywords into the tags box you know that it'll only register the first keyword in the list, leaving the rest out and leaving you to type every single keyword every time you post a new video.
WELL NOT ANYMORE!
If you type your Keywords into Notepad separated by commas and a space, for example "let's play, gone wrong, gone sexual" (without quotation marks), you can then copy and paste them into your tags box and it'll add all of them.

You can also just save a bunch of general tags through youtube under Video Manager and then Channel. I usually save all of my basic tags such as "lets play, gaming, video games, etc." and then I post all of the more game-specific ones after that.

YouTube ranks tags by how consistently they appear in all elements of your video. The best tag will be mentioned in your title, description, in the dialogue of your video (which the algorithm finds from the auto subtitles), mentioned by comments, and finally in the tags. Your most important tags should be mentioned in all of these categories on your video. Words that are only in the tags but not in the title/description are basically meaningless because the algorithm knows they are not likely to accurately represent what the video is about. Also note that when you search on YouTube the results are going to be different for someone else. Search results change depending on who is doing the searching and their past watch history. Tags don't make a big difference anymore. Don't bother. I use tubebuddy free to see what other "competitors" are using. When you have the extension installed and watch a video it shows what tags they use. You can use that to learn, but otherwise just write some relevant tags yourself. Tags are mostly used to cover typos and maybe some keywords that are not present in the title or description. My advice, but take it with a grain of salt, is to focus more on titles and descriptions. For shorts even these are less relevant. I've seen shorts-focused channels that use titles like "HAHA" or "LOL" with lots of emojis, no description, no tags, and still have hundreds of MILLIONS of views.
