October 8, 2023 -

I am renovating a shower at my condo. After tearing out the wall on the valve side, I noticed it was double stacked 5/8 drywall, they tiled directly to the drywall, hence why I am replacing it because the tiles were beginning to fail and pop off.

My plan is to furr out the stud 1/8”, place the 5/8 drywall, and then secure 1/2 cement board over top of that to match the drywall seam at the edge of the shower. I will ensure I use long enough screws to get into the stud for the cement board. The cement board will be waterproofed with red guard or aqua defense.

Should I put some sort of vapor barrier between the drywall and cement board?

Any other concerns or recommendations?

September 11, 2007 - Sort of, except that they give an R-0.13 rating to their 1/4" material - I haven't been able to find anything on their 1/2" material, but doubling the 1/4" number gives 0.26, same as 1/2" Durock. Their tech support guy said around 0.15, but sounded like he really didn't know for certain.
