If not, has anyone every used a gas powered shovel?

Title isn’t clear. Can you “just till 9”” - no, you have to till then shovel the dirt out.. like you describe in one of your comments. That said, if your goal is to till to loosen the dirt before removing with a shovel, why were you thinking that you could not?

A little explanation -- in the back yard there was an existing outdoor fireplace built around 1940 or so, but it was in deplorable condition. The soil had migrated into the firebox, and basically the previous owners had used it as a planter base. In the beginning I mowed around it, but over time began to form a plan to scallop out the area in front of it to allow for seating (and naturally, beer/wine drinking).
