If it touches the print, it's a brim ( used for increased bed adhesion ). A skirt is only a line around the print without it touching. ( used to verify that the bed is level, the z offset is correct and that the nozzle is primed ) you can switch between them with the "bed plate adhesion type" settings in cura. As for the squished first layer: you should adjust the z offset on your printer ( z offset = the distance between the nozzle and the bed level sensor trigger point ) watch some YouTube videos on the topic if you are unsure on how to calibrate it correctly. *Edit* and you only need additional software if you want to create your own models. ( CAD Software like fusion 360, Onshape, blender,...) More on reddit.com

May 4, 2021Cura software for Monoprice Maker Select Plus?
I have a Maker Select v2.1 and I used the custom printer option and followed this. Additionally, assuming the Plus comes an SD card, the proper version of Cura might be on there. I think mine was called IIIP.exe More on reddit.com

It used to be one of the premier go to for slicers cause it was open source. Seems like these days it’s about prusaslicer, Bambu studio, and Orca.
I cut me teeth with the first versions of it. But jumped ship when prusaslicer development over took Cura.
Did anyone else just jump slicers from Cura?

Cura was my go-to for a few years until I got the adventurer 5m. Swapped to orca. Ever since then, printing over wifi has been so much easier and orca's presets are really good. I had to fine tune so many settings in cura, but in orca I just select my printer (I have the 5m, a cr10, and an ender 3 s1) and nozzle size and the only other settings I tune are model dependent supports.

Just got into 3D printing with the Anycubic Kobra. I'm shocked with how little problems I've had but that's leading me to believe I'm just doing something wrong that'll creep up on me later. My prints are coming out pretty beautifully except that the skirts are attached to my 3d prints and they surround my prints at about 1/4" width around the entire probt. I've been using a utility knife to just trim off the skirts but I'm hearing now that the skirts shouldn't even be touching the prints, and as a result I think my bottom layer is squishing a bit and isn't perfectly smooth. Is Ultimaker Cura all I need to adjust settings to fix this? (Whatever that setting may be..) or are there other programs I should look into downloading?

For going from finished model to 3d print file yes, you pretty much adjust all print parameters on the slicer. The printer has a few hardware values though that are also important, for example probe Z offset. But in terms of programs you dont need anything else.
