What's The Difference? New Era 59Fifty Vs 9Fifty Caps
July 22, 2021 - The full crown produces a tall profile similar to what the 59fifty features. The visor is also flat. You can curve the visor if you wish. The plastic snapback feature or the strap design may feature the same color as the rest of the hat.

r/neweracaps on Reddit: 59Fifty Vs 9fifty
February 14, 2023 -

Hi guys, I see most people here roll with 59fifties (fitted), I personally been a 9fifty guy since I was a kid. Is there a reason why many of yrl prefer 59fifties, I mean is there an added advantage that I don’t know of?

I’m eager to learn.

Both are good, but fitted hats are hard to collect. You may have to try 10 of the same size on before you get the correct one, because they’re hand stitched and they will all fit differently, even though they’re the supposed “same size”. The fitted hats do have a timeless look, but then again so do the snapbacks. They have a nostalgic appeal, and a lot of the rap and rock artists made them famous in the late 80s and early 90’s. They have more street flavor, and they’re much easier to collect. Fitted MLB hats are more popular in the US. Overseas, not as much. Both styles are good, and I have both, but I think I prefer 9Fifty because they’re a little cooler In hot weather. I can adjust with hair style changes and cuts if need be, and when I order online, I automatically know it will fit. It’s literally 90% the same hat as the 59Fifty, with only the back being the difference. Thickness, material, logo thread counts are all the same.

I like them both. My collection is small but growing (probably about 6 caps and a few other New Era hats, winter hats/bucket hat). Most of them are 59fifty and I will give those the edge because they fit well and are a classic cap IMO (plus a lot of the limited runs that I think are cool are not available in 9fifty). However, I have bought a couple of 9fiftys (only 2 now) and will continue to do so for some hats. If you're not looking at the back you won't even notice and it's an option to give to friends/family members to borrow if they go to Yankee games with me and don't have a Yankee hat of their own.

9Seventy vs 59Fifty
I have 9-10 9seventys now. Love them. There’s a few different styles with them, trucker, golf type, cotton and dri fit sort of thing. Really loving them to be honest. Give them a shot, you will love them. Look for the spring training ones as they’re on sale now so it’s easier on the wallet to try. More on reddit.com

I like to wear my one size fits most 9FIFTY snapback 2 or 3 notches in. Does this correspond to 7 5/8 and 7 1/2 fitted?
My advice is try on as ordering is a minefield even when you know your fitted size. I was 7 3/8 for years then the last one I ordered didnt fit right and I had to spend a lot of time shrinking it with water and steam, it now fits perfectly but the fabric isn't like a new hat now, lint sticks to it easier. If I was to do it over again I'd order a 7 1/4 as well and send back the one that didnt fit but I thought I knew my size. From reading posts on here it seems lots of others have had issues with the same size hats fitting differently. Also, are snapbacks one size now? as mine say inside either small med or med large. small med with hair grown out i use 4 snaps loosened, but on windy days or after a haircut i might use 3. My med large i rarely wear bc i think i seem to be again in between sizes on that one. 3 snaps loosened is a bit loose but 2 loosened is slightly tight. Though what i think is loose is how i see many people wearing hats now where the brim is almost flat and you can fit 2 fingers under the space in front your ear. I guess it's fine for a poker player but I hate loose hats with flat brims it looks corny to me and it will fall off. If the hat fits properly the brim will acquire a nice gentle curve on its own. Anyway I digress, the point is that small med and med large are different, for me as a guy who takes either 7 3/8 or 7 1/4 it's a difference of a snap, and in med large i use 3 snaps loosened and small.med 4 snaps loosened. Basically 3 empty snaps on the med large feels close to the 7 3/8 i just got when it arrived, possibly a smidge tighter but still looser than after I shrunk the fitted one quite a bit with steam. So i would think one snap loose seems to be 7 on med large, 2 snaps 7 1/4, 3 7 1/4 and so on but i could be wrong. To me fit is everything with clothes but even more so with hats which is why i recommend trying on is the best way ar least for your first fitted. Or if you cant get to a store id be ordering 2 sizes to return one. Even if they charge you (think fanatics charge 10 to return) it would be better because if the hat doesnt fit you either will have to send it back anyway or deal with a poorly fitting hat which sucks. The reason i rarely wear the med large snapback is my small med fits perfectly as do my 2 on field fitteds and I can't deal with even a tiny bit too much tightness or looseness. It wasn't a total waste of money but I only wear it for DIY, painting, etc. With a too tight hatyou get sort of 'head fatigue' similar to the ear fatigue of wearing bulky over head headphones that are tight. Too loose and a gust of wind can make your hat blow off and you also wont get the nice gentle curve in the brim that forms to your head when a perfectly fitted hat is worn. And you can't run down fly balls in the outfield. More on reddit.com

How snug should the 59Fifty fit?
I don’t like mine too snug or falling off my head a 7 1/4 for me is snug (unless I have a haircut) and if I go up a size which is 7 3/8 It feels good except when I do get a haircut it feels loose Lol so it just depends on yours preference I get both sizes maybe consider the same thing More on reddit.com

59fifty... how to keep the brim curved?
The material the brim is made of has a lot to do with holding a curve. Some materials are softer and can't hold a curve as well as a harder brim. Check out Dre in the 616 (link below). He has a lot of toturials and a video where he explains the different materials used for the brim. There's differences in the manufacturing from factory to factory. Personally I feel like on fields in general have a better brim to hold a curve. https://youtube.com/channel/UCc1h5hDkNTVW6-Yw6t6fhbA More on reddit.com
