I’ve lived in New York City for 17 years now and I recently got into thrifting. I live in manhattan and thrifting is really bad there, overpriced, etc. Even the recommended stores like L Train on 14th. I’ve seen some better prices in queens and brooklyn, but i have little experience there. What are some thrift store recommendations that are better priced and/or more obscure?
I’m visiting nyc next month and i need to know where to find the best thrifting places!! comment below💋💋

I’ve been to a few thrift stores and I’m noticing that some of them are a bit pricey 😅
For example, The places I’ve checked out seem to price shirts (plain random shirts, not designer or anything) at like tjmaxx comparable prices..
I’ve been to a few Goodwills that were DECENT, but the one in Brooklyn is getting crazy with their prices (they’ve made the store to appeal more to those who just thrift for trends, but what about people who actually can’t afford other many options than thrifting??), and I tried Buffalo Exchanges but they’re not really worth it in my opinion
What are some good thrift stores that have actually good prices?
everywhere i go everything is 20$+ for a shirt?? like shouldnt they be 10$ at most bc thrift stores are usually used clothes? anyway, looking for places close to queens, but anywhere near the city is fine!! i just cant find any thrift stores (item + clothing thrift stores!)
I’m really into thrifting and finding clothes that are good quality and can last but the “thrift stores” are just becoming regular stores! Do you guys have any recs as BWT?
any recommendations for good places to thrift that isn’t insanely overpriced ?
I’ve just been noticing a lot of places calling themselves vintage clothing resellers with a lot of the same complaints of expensive prices and mediocre service So I wondered if there are still any reasonable thrift stores or cheap consignment shops in the borough and if not, in other places in the city
hello im new in town so im looking for good but cheap thrift stores in the city. also is it possible to do winter shopping in thrift stores here? please let me know
Salvation Army in Hell's Kitchen and most Goodwill locations are still cheap (items under $10 are common).
Honestly have found the best pop ups and shops on instagram. If you follow @thrift2death, they had a huge warehouse sale near red hook this past weekend with like 30+ vendors where most items were in the $5-20 range.
A lot of the cheaper thrifting options have been in brooklyn in my experience.
Walking around midtown and seeing tons of professionals in fancy clothes, suits, and other garments—would love to upscale my wardrobe, but paying full price for those kinds of clothes is well beyond my budget.
Lots of people talk about hitting thrift shops in nice neighborhoods.
Any suggestions on places where rich people drop off their unwanted, but higher-end stuff? What's the best place you've found for high-end thrift?
i’ve only lived in nyc for a year now but i haven’t managed to find a thrift store and/or a curated vintage store (which god save us all from that hell hole)that’s not dumb expensive! If anyone is willing to share their secret spots i’d be forever grateful :)
My wife and I and our 16 year old son are coming to visit NYC next month. We love to thrift, especially our son. Is there a specific area that has a lot of thrifting near each other? What are your favorite NYC thrifts in general?
I’m a broke student at NYU wanting to wear cool dirt cheap clothes. Can you give me suggestions on where all the cool kids shop?
L Train Vintage is great. There are a bunch of locations in Brooklyn and the East Village, and they consistently have good stuff for reasonable prices. Beacon’s and Buffalo Exchange are also worth a look, but you’ll have to do more digging. 10 Foot Single by Stella Dallas in Williamsburg is a bit pricier, but you can find some great deals, especially on accessories. I also adore Awoke Vintage (they have locations in Williamsburg and Greenpoint); their regular retail prices are a bit high, but they have amazing sale racks that they update regularly.
L Train Vintage is regularly recommended. Telco and El Mundo among others are recommended by Stores with very cheap clothes? from 8 days ago. Le Point Value and Goodwill among others are recommended by Good Inexpensive thrift stores in nyc? from 2 months before that. Soho and L train Vintage among others are recommended by Best Housing Works for men's clothing? from 3 days before that. L Train vintages is recommended by Best thrift stores in NYC? from 1 day before that and links to similar questions.
Looking for some cute but preferably cheap thrift stores in these areas! Any suggestions will help!
Im looking for the best and more affordable thrift stores in NY

Hello. Interested in visiting some thrift stores and taking some clothes I don't wear anymore or brand new clothes (with tags) that I never used and getting good value for them whether it's through credit or cash.
Most of the clothing I will be trading in are mid level to low level urban wear. Mostly shirts, t-shirts, sweaters and jean jackets and a few pair of jeans.
Would like to hear some of your experiences with thrift shops in Manhattan. Maybe you were disappointed on the value you were offered or the selection of clothing wasn't the best. Any input is appreciated.
NYC in my opinion is the best city in the US to thrift in. The high concentration of very wealthy and fashionable people means that the chances of finding something incredible are much higher than in your average city. Ive found a shit ton of good stuff, both for myself and for resell. Ive probably made about $10,000 off of stuff that I have resold this year. If you're curious what I've found check out my insta @thriftopher!
Here are some general tips.
-
Go early, but not too early Don't go right when the store opens, because usually they haven't put the new stuff out yet. I generally go about an hour after opening time just to be safe.
-
Know where the put new items Most shops have a method for how the put new items on the rack, figure it out and your life will be a lot easier.
-
If you don't see anything you like leave Best advice you'll get honestly. Its never a good idea to buy something just to buy it, you'll save money and time by leaving without getting anything. I probably get something 20% of the time i got into a shop.
-
Go frequently Its better to go once a day for 5 min than to go once a week and stay for half an hour.
-
Avoid the weekend Its generally more crowded, more picked over and the trains are worse.
Heres a guide to my top 5 Shops.
| Shop | Adress | Guide | Tips | Types of things you will find there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beacons Closet Manhattan | 10 W 13th St | Honestly the best shop in the city in my opinion. Really good selection of both hyped stuff and high fashion. A bit on the pricier side as far as thrift shops go, but the prices are cheap enough that I still consider it a thrift store not a consignment shop. I can almost always find something worth keeping or reselling every day I come here. | On weekdays try to get in before 3-4pm because It tends to get pretty crowded. Pants are hard to find here, because mens+woman's pants are not separated. Focus on tees, sweatshirts and shoes. | They have it all. Supreme, Archive CDG, Rick Owens +More |
| L Train Vintage Manhattan | 204 1st Avenue | Great semi-curated vintage shop. Most shirts around $5-10. Store is jammed full clothes, so make sure to check upstairs + downstairs. | Pretty Self explanatory shop, again try shopping early on weekdays, because it'll be crowded on weekend and afternoons. Make sure to look downstairs at the windbreaker/jackets section. Also have a great selection of jeans, and you can probably pick of a pair of vintage Levi's in your size for $10-15 | Vintage Polo, Vintage nike gear, Vintage nike sneakers. |
| Tokio 7 | 83 E 7th St | This is basically Grailed if it had a real store. They do their research and price things at what they're really worth. Generally a great selection of really nice things, but not cheap. They have a good selection of Japanese brands and have a pretty good selection of hyped stuff as well. This is basically like buying from a reseller without worrying about getting scammed and fakes. | Never too crowded. Make sure to check the front of the store first, because thats where the newest items are. | Old + New Bape. Visvim, Undercover Raf |
| Housing Works Upper East Side | 1222 2nd Ave | This shop is filled with rich white people shit. Housing works can be kinda pricy, but sometimes they have good steals. Occasionally they have trendier stuff too. | Check the jeans and polo racks, they've the places Ive found the best stuff. Also a goodwill on 61st and 1st so you might want to check that out. | Armani, Allen Edmonds, Prada, Gucci. |
| Beacons Closet Williamsburg | 74 Guernsey St | This is the big brother of the beacons closet in Manhattan. It's a lot bigger, and slightly less expensive, but also has slightly less good stuff. Again try to get in here early before it gets too picked over. They also tend to have a really good selection of brand new items from new York brands, and skate brands. | Check out the tees, jackets and shoes, and you'll probably find something worth getting. | Bianca Chandon, AMI, Awoke NY, Kith. |
Message me or comment if you have any questions. This is something I've spent a bunch of time doing, so id love to help!

Hey all,
Heading to New York for the first time in my adult life next week, and I was hoping for some good store recommendations to check out. Not really looking for Bape/Supreme/Palace-esque stores. I'd likely be more interested in good thrifting/secondhand/vintage places, but of course down to hear some must-see stores that are selling new clothes as well.
Thanks in advance!
My family is going to new York in 8 days. What is the best thrift store, ideally accessible by walking or public transport as won't have a car and stuff you could take back on a plane E.g not furniture . Curated more exspensive Vintage stores also okay, but hoping to find where people who live in New York actually go, that isn't too over priced and often has a good range. Flee Markets also accepted as we will be there for at least a week (need to look at length again) from the 18th.
Sorry if this is a repeated question I will take it down if it is.
Any recommendations are much appreciated.
Edit: good point below, I should add that I mean in central new York kind of area or accessible easily by transport rather than out in far suburbs or not near anywhere, but anywhere suggested I will take a look if it works from where I am staying. (Sorry if that doesn't make sense I can give a better sense of area)
What are some good thrift stores that have some good pieces that arent outrageous prices are there some underrated/underground thrift stores? (I’m trying to improve my style lol)
