How does AHREFS and SEMRush and Moz, etc, know the volume of searches for a given keyword/phrase?
Are Ahrefs and SemRush currently useful for keyword research? Or did the recent Google search result changes limit their usefulness?
Is ahrefs your go to? or something else?

It's not like they have backend information that only the search engines have (Bing, Google, etc...)... Or do they? How do these SEO keyword tools figure out search volume?
I was reading in this sub and elsewhere how Google's recent search result changes have limited the usefulness of certain features of Ahrefs and SemRush as they try to figure out how to adapt. Is that the case for keyword research? I was considering signing up for a free trial on SemRush or for one month on Ahrefs to do keyword research for my single website. How well would that work now, and which of those two services do you recommend to optimize SEO on existing pages, find new search term possibilities I may not have thought of with lower competition, and to create new pages to fill SEO gaps?
I am looking to do a deep dive on my SEO and wondering if ahrefs is still the best to go into all the details or my website and my competitor's websites, or if there is a better option?
I keep seeing ads for SimilarWeb and another one, but not sure if they are as robust as ahrefs.
