Moving to Arlington, VA for Amazon (WAS19) – Need Tips on Housing, Transport & More!
My main office is over at IAD, but I’ll share some info about nova in general. You already got answers to 1&2 so I’ll share on 3&4 also. It depends on your budget, optimal commute time, and if you’re comfortable with roommates. I think the closest metro stop is about a 10 minute walk (crystal city). Popular places a lot of the younger people I know are Clarendon or Ballston (metro stops close by too) Or you can go further into the suburbs. If you’re set on metro, I would look up the DC metro map and try to scout apartments within walking distance to a stop. I personally would recommend staying in VA vs going to MD/DC. You’ll see some cheaper places in MD but your commute life becomes hell if you ever have to drive to work. r/nova is the subreddit for northern VA specifically (you can see how boring and sheltered we are). If you’re interested in museums, they’re all pretty cool. But check out the Udvar Hazy (aerospace) in VA off route 28. Depending on where you’re relocating from, NOVA could be a big change from what you’re used to. Lots of traffic, crazy high housing market, and learning to hate Maryland drivers if you live in VA. Because you mentioned safe, I would look up crime statistics of the neighborhoods you look at. NOVA is a very safe place overall with pockets of not great areas that I would avoid living in (still relatively safe/ low crime). More on reddit.com

Amazon HQ2 to receive $81,000 in public dollars from Arlington, Virginia
$81…thousand? Like three 0s? I hate corporate welfare as much as the next guy, but why are we spilling ink to talk about a news article (from the guy who owns Amazon) getting less than some red light cameras make in a week? EDIT: If anything, this is probably some SEO/sanewashing scheme to make it seem like they didn’t get a hugely sweetheart deal off the backs of taxpayers. More on reddit.com

r/amazonemployees on Reddit: Moving to Arlington, VA for Amazon (WAS19) – Need Tips on Housing, Transport & More!
June 7, 2025 -

Hey everyone!

I’m going to be joining Amazon at WAS19 (HQ2) in Arlington, VA soon, and I’ll be relocating for the role. Super excited — but I’ve got a lot of questions and would love advice from anyone familiar with the area or who has worked at Amazon HQ2.

A few things I’m trying to figure out:

  1. Public Transportation – How reliable is the Metro and bus system around WAS19? Can I depend on it daily for commuting?

  2. Amazon Shuttle Services – Does Amazon offer any shuttle service from nearby neighborhoods to WAS19?

  3. Best Places to Live – What are some good neighborhoods (safe, reasonable rent, and good connectivity)? I’m looking for a place that offers a good value for money — doesn’t have to be super fancy, just livable and secure. I’d prefer something commutable via public transit or bike.

  4. Anything Else I Should Know? – Any tips on moving to the DMV area, Amazon-specific info for new joiners, or must-know tricks for making the transition easier?

Would appreciate any insights from folks who've made this move recently or live/work nearby. Thanks in advance!
