Getting ahold of chat in the app in 2024 can be a pain in the neck, especially if your issue isn't listed in the prepopulated options since there isn't a "other" or "my issue isn't listed" option.
But if you select a recent item you've order and select "delivery feedback" and then property damage, it will give you the option to connect to chat support. Just wanted to share that for anyone that might find it helpful. See pictures for details.
You'll need to have an item that is from the last month or two to have these options, otherwise you might not see them.
Edit: 10/12/2024 - It seems they've moved things around. To reach customer service using this method, do this: on the app, tap the three horizontal lines and then select "Contact Us". Then select a recent order. Then tap "Report Property Damage". Then tap "I need more help." Then, FINALLY, you will have the option to tap "Start Chatting Now".
Edit: 11/18/2024 - Man, Amazon loves moving things around. Basically, if you play around with the options similar to the fixes I've given, you should be able to find your way to the chat option eventually. But as of today, here is what you need to do (on Android app in the US):
Tap the three horizontal lines to the right of the shopping cart icon on the bottom. At the very bottom select "Customer Service". Select your order (any recent order, doesn't matter which). Then select "Share Delivery Feedback", then "Report Property Damage". Then "I need more help", and then finally you can start a chat.
