r/techsupport on Reddit: How do I recover failed BIOS flashing on AMI BIOS?
March 31, 2020 -

So, what happened is that I'm trying to edit bios logo, and flashing it via windows with AFUWIN. Bios manufacturer is AMI BIOS.

The next thing that happened after restarting is it won't enter windows. Not even I can enter BIOS configuration. On bottom right corner, there's code 0033. According to AMI BIOS, this means "Initializes silent boot module. Set the window for displaying text information."

I have tried CMOS clearing (done with jumper), it didn't do anything. Tried to enter BIOS menu with Delete button, nada. RMA is out of question, the motherboard is old! So I left with two options:

  1. Take out the EEPROM and program it with Arduino as it's not soldered. Or...

  2. Initialize AMI BIOS recovery method (CTRL+HOME)

Obviously I'm trying method no.2 as it's simpler. However there's some problem. Somewhere on internet, it says that I need to use floppy disk. I don't have any. Other says that it needs USB flash drive formatted with FAT32. Both method requires BIOS file to be named as AMIBOOT.ROM

I have done both: flash drive is FAT32 and AMIBOOT.ROM is present. It doesn't detect the BIOS file as I waited for 5 minutes, nothing happened. So please tell me what's wrong with my method? Thanks!

Edit: I realized ASRock might've disabled ctrl-home combination, from this page dated 2004.

Yet another edit: been trying to flashing it with Arduino (serfrog+frser_duino) it didn't work. Good news is the BIOS chip wasn't toast.

Final edit: after several flashing attempt, it failed. During removal of chip, one of the eeprom leg is broken. Guess I must take the mobo to official repair center, they might have bios chip in hand. If you're reading this, bios chip is "mx25l8006e". (Solved)

Another edit as 31 March 2020: it worked! I'm using different bios chip by winbond w25q80bvatg, flashing with ch341a, verifying, and it booted up wonderfully!

Computer specs:

  • Asrock G41M-VS3 (this)

  • BIOS manufacturer: AMI BIOS

  • Mobo year of production: circa 2009

[SOLVED] Recovering Corrupt AMI BIOS | Tech Support Forum
December 27, 2010 - Re: Recovering Corrupt AMI BIOS What caused the problem? A bad flash will generally brick the Bios chip making it unusable. If your Bios chip is NOT soldered to the Mobo it can be replaced pretty easily. If it IS soldered it is more difficult and should be done by a professional and that would cost more than a replacement Mobo.
