July 16, 2007 - Angelica's extended absence from America, as well as the Schuyler family's continued devotion to Hamilton, lend support to the view that Angelica's banter was a joke between sisters rather than evidence of an actual affair. r/hamiltonmusical on Reddit: The Three Levels of Being a Forgotten Schuyler Sibling
May 6, 2021 -

Philip Schuyler had 15 children, 8 of whom survived into adulthood. 3 of them are featured in the musical with varying levels of importance. 2 are central to the story while the other 6 are disregarded to different degrees.

Level 1: "And Peggy!"

  • Beyond The Schuyler Sisters and Helpless, Peggy is not actively mentioned in the show. The character appears in the choreography for these two songs as well as A Winter's Ball and Satisfied. After this she is not mentioned ever again in the musical, nor would her being mentioned have made a difference to the plot.

Level 2: Unmentioned Sisters

  • Everyone knows and loves Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy. They had two other sisters, however - Cornelia and Catherine Van Rensselaer Schuyler - who were not mentioned at all in the musical and were irrelevant to the plot Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. No reference or mention is made at all of any other sisters at any point in the show and I only know them because I was looking up the real and saw more sisters listed for Eliza than just Angelica and Peggy.

Level 3: Completely Killed Off Brothers

  • "My father has no sons so I'm the one who has to social climb for one." This line was delivered by Angelica in Satisfied (and reminds us all of the unfair choices available to women in those days). In actual fact, he had 3 living sons: John Bradstreet, Philip Jeremiah and Rensselaer who were 15, 12, and 7 respectively at the time. Additionally, Angelica wasn't even an option for Alexander, since she had been married to John Barker Church since 1777.

The show does Peggy an injustice. Not only do they barely mention her, but they completely changed her personality. Peggy was the most fun, outrageous one.

Okay so Peggy was brilliant. (We visited the Schuyler House in Albany for only an afternoon in 2019, so if anyone knows better, please correct me.) She wanted to learn German, but engineering books were the only German texts that were in her father's library (maybe the best in upstate NY but still very limited). So she used those to teach herself German and managed to get into engineering too, and she would discuss bridge design and engineering solutions with dinner guests. I wish Lin had worked in something about her being a little STEM-nerdy. The sons were all kind of losers and didn't amount to much. Pretty common among privileged men of the era who had a lot to lose and nothing to prove. The tomahawk story is likely embellished, but there is a biggish chunk missing from the bannister on the ground floor. I think there's some disagreement about who was attacking and that white men may have used weapons and worn clothing stolen from the Seneca (I think?) to stir up the white folks and prevent truce/alliances between the white patriots and the tribal peoples of the Hudson Valley. Oh, one last thing: Catherine van Rensselaer Schuyler was a social powerhouse, and as matriarch in a Colonial Dutch family, she was the one who would have been the stone-faced decision maker when it came to her children's marriage matches, as fathers in Dutch culture at the time didn't understand the social power dynamics and the intricate dynastic moves that a marriage might require. Colonial Dutch matriarchs were charged with the duty of strengthening the family's social position and the duty of marrying off their children to the best people. Mrs. Schuyler —"Kitty" to close friends— might have given in to Eliza and Hamilton in part to keep control of the situation, as she probably didn't want a repeat of Angelica's elopement with "John Carter," who was a complete social blank to Mr and Mrs Schuyler when they ran off together. They were extremely upset and angry with Angelica because they didn't know anything about him, likely because he was operating under the "Carter" pseudonym. They accepted him only after they learned his name was John Church and that he was a smart, business-minded, and very wealthy merchant.
