Don’t trust 1-877-255-5923, it’s a scam and spoof!

I got a call from 1-877-255-5923, they came up as Goldman Sachs. I’d been having fraud on my AppleCard and my virtual card was replaced several times over the past few months. I was worried that there had been more so I answered and at first it seemed to be going ok.

Admittedly, they were also hard to understand but their English was exactly basically the same as other possibly foreign or accented reps at other companies and the connection itself was just ok enough not to raise any major alarms for me (I’ve had some where they can barely read the script).

They had been asking if I made these large purchases out of the country, then gave specifics (just said no, no, etc), and then they said I should replace the card and I was like ok (even though it’s been doing so automatically). I got suspicious when they asked me to verify my card number, more specifically, the entire number. At first I thought he just wanted the last four or etc which IME is typical but even then these days especially with Apple they’re able to see just about everything and will/can text.

I searched for the number and the first result was a post from here (4yr+ ago) but I didn’t notice the number was exact same in the post until now, but people there stemmed to be unsure but mostly toward it was a scam. Looking up the actual number, it seemed pretty close but I was a bit panicky and couldn’t think straight. I hung up, they kept calling, and I replaced the card number + advanced fraud protection while also starting a support text via Apple’s “Support” (blue icon with a little white Apple icon in the top right corner). They still saw some fraud but it was stuff I was aware of (but from months ago), they had me do the replacement of the virtual card and confirmed that the phone number was not them and had no activity logged. They didn’t see any of the aforementioned out of country fraud either.

One thing I’ll add is I also asked the scammer if needed a new physical card and if it would cost money (mine is a bit scuffed) and they were confused at first then assured me they would “cover it” then said/corrected it to “we’ll issue you a new one as well”. That and they gave me a case id, with the same number after asking for it several times.

Stay safe, that number is still actively scamming people and does somewhat closely resemble the Google results for Goldman Sachs number.

Anyways, feel free to add anything that might be relevant, I’m not sure what Apple does outside of the auto card replacement or cases where they (Apple and/or GS) initiate contact as I’ve basically only used the text for AppleCard support.

Question in title. I don't want to only have access through apple devices. I only own an iPhone and not sure what I can do if I happen to lose it.

First a little background info. My apple card virtual number was somehow obtained and I believe posted online. There have been over 100 bogus charges and they continue to show up even though I immediately changed apple id password, cancelled physical card, changed virtual card numer and three digit code. In multiple calls to GS I was given bogus information by multiple reps. One rep stated that my Apple Card was hacked. Another said my only fix would be to close credit card and to reapply for new card.

Another issue is that these declined charges continue to show up on apple card app. GS rep indicated that to stop declined messages that I should turn off alerts for card which is not a viable solution and would hide any new alerts that are legitimate. One GS rep blamed Apple stating it was an issue with IOS.So I then called Apple and they said it was not their issue and GS could not stop declined alerts but I needed to contact fraud department at Mastercard directly as they were the ones that could stop delined alerts. Next call was to Master card where I was transferred to GS four times after specifically asking for Mastercard fraud department not GS. I was told that this had to be escalated and I would hear from a senior representative. That was two weeks ago and no one has called or emailed. Both Master card and GS conveyed that this issue would be escalated and I would receive a call or email. Neither company has responded by phone or email.

I have spent close to three hours on phone and fact that GS and Mastercard will not address this issue is frustrating to say the least. Does anyone know if declined alerts from a virtual number that has been closed can be stopped and why GS and mastercard will not address the issue and respond as indicated by reps?
