I have the newest 4K with Ethernet on my main TV and am very happy with it. A co-worker is offering a first gen 4K for 50 bucks. Is it worth it this many years later? How long will it receive updates for the OS and the apps themselves? This would be for the bedroom tv which currently runs a Roku. I imagine it’s an improvement over the Roku, but just concerned about its viability over the next five years or so, even at $50 bucks (CAD). Thanks for any insight.

I currently own an Apple TV 4K 1st generation box and I really love it. I bought it a couple of years ago for only $100 at Walmart when it was on clearance. But I believe we are up to 3rd generation now. Is it worth upgrading to the latest generation? Or should I just keep using my 1st generation box?

3rd gen is noticeably faster. Supports HDR on YouTube unlike the first gen, and HDR10+ as well. If any of that is important to you, I’d say it’s worth the upgrade, otherwise not really.

I don't think it's worth going to buy a brand new one unless you really want HDR10+. The first gen 4k is still plenty fast and supports the main 4k formats (HDR and Dolby Vision). But if you're a bit r/frugal like I am, I would try to sell your current one (Facebook Marketplace/Craigslist/eBay) and then buy the next generation that is for sale on those same sites. In the past couple months I have sold two of my first gen 4ks for $80 and $90, and then bought two of the 2nd gen 4ks for $75 and $50 from users selling theirs. So not only was I able to update my Apple TV generation, but also made a profit in doing so.
