r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Easily track grocery prices in Canada? Can it be done?
January 5, 2025 -

I would love to be able to walk down the isle of for example Atlantic Superstore, Walmart, or Sobeys, use my phone to add items I typically purchase and have these items added to a database, then, when it comes time to do my grocery order I add what items I want to buy and the app tells me what grocer will have the lowest price total for all the item I want to buy or if I choose to go to more than one I can save even more. Does such an app for IOS exist?

I don't think that such an app exists, but I have a custom spreadsheet with the stores we regularly shop at and the items we usually buy. Costco is almost always the best deal, but the odd item is cheaper at Walmart or Superstore, and there are some specific brands that we prefer even though they're not the cheapest. So we usually do a couple trips to Costco each month for the bulk of our groceries, then a few smaller grocery pickup orders at Superstore and/or Walmart.

7 years ago I was playing around and made a scraper that scraped a bunch of grocery store websites and recorded their price. I could then look at discount trends and compare what store had the best price. It was interesting but it was incomplete. Sometimes discounts are only applied when you buy more than one item and because stores have loyalty programs they can give you bonuses for buying items that aren't reflected in the price. For instance, Loblaws gives 10% back in Optimum points for their PC brand or will give bonus points for buying certain products. In today's world it gets even more complicated because there are even more options. For instance, FlashFood can give you discounts that don't show up in the store as it selling food approaching its best-by date. Too Good to Go does something similar and includes restaurants too. And then you have the increased frequency of price changes. Price tags are going digital which means they can be changed a lot more often, adjusting for supply and demand. In short, I don't think there's an easy way to consistently get the lowest price. But, if you invest time and effort into it you save significant amounts of money.
