How Many Inches of a Mattress Topper Is Best?
The best thickness for a mattress topper depends on your needs. A 2-3 inch topper is sufficient for minor adjustments, while a 4-5 inch topper provides enhanced support and cushioning for firmer or older mattresses. Thicker toppers are better for pressure relief and comfort.

Will a Mattress Topper Make My Bed More Comfortable?
A mattress topper can significantly improve your bed's comfort by adding a layer of cushioning or support. It's ideal for revitalising older mattresses, adjusting firmness levels, or relieving pressure on key areas like the back and hips, making it a practical solution for enhancing sleep quality.

Is It a Good Idea to Buy a Mattress Topper in Place of a Mattress?
While a mattress topper can enhance comfort, it is not a replacement for a mattress. Toppers address surface-level issues like firmness but cannot fix a worn-out or sagging mattress. For long-term comfort and support, investing in a new mattress is essential.

The best mattress toppers to buy in 2025: Tried and tested toppers from Silentnight, Panda and more | Expert Reviews UK
May 8, 2025 - Tested on top of a mattress that might be a little too firm for lightweight sleepers, it’s a fantastic addition that won’t break the bank at £80 for a double. The Full Forever is available in a 3cm or 6cm depth (we reviewed the latter). It’s filled with a polyester “spiral fibre” and covered in a 230-thread count cotton cover, with a cassette construction that ensures that the filling is spread evenly throughout the topper across stitched pockets.

Its lightweight and compact design also makes it easy to put on and remove as the seasons change. It’s washable, comes in a simple plastic storage bag, and is incredibly easy to handle — perfect for those wanting quick comfort on a budget. Hokway 5cm Single Memory Foam Mattress Topper
If versatility matters, the Bonnvia Thick Mattress Topper is a fantastic choice with its dual comfort levels and premium build, earning it the Runner-Up spot. For a budget-friendly option, the Silentnight Deep Sleep Mattress Topper adds softness and warmth without breaking the bank. Even after following the instructions to allow 72 hours for the topper to expand, noticeable folds and creases remained, severely impacting comfort. The overpowering odour upon unboxing was intense and lingered for days. We wouldn't recommend this product. 5cm gel-infused memory foam topper with bamboo fibre cover.

r/Mattress on Reddit: What’s the best cooling mattress topper in the UK?
February 26, 2025 -

Hello! My partner and I are both terrible sleepers - we both wriggle a lot and we sleep hot, so we decided to get a king size cooling hybrid mattress.

We tried the cooling Simba hybrid mattress which was great for motion isolation, but it was way too hot. We currently have the Emma next gen cooling hybrid mattress, again great for motion isolation but also super hot.

We’re thinking that if we get a new mattress that’s not memory foam, that would be cooler but then we’d be able to feel each other moving, so we’re leaning towards keeping the Emma but putting a cooling topper on it.

Do you think that’s the best idea? And if so, what cooling topper would be the best? We’re looking to spend no more than £400 on the king size topper, and we’re in the UK. Thank you!

You’re definitely not alone—many people think a “cooling” topper will solve overheating issues, but most of the time it just delays the inevitable. The truth is, most so-called “cooling” toppers (especially ones with memory foam) are built on materials that naturally retain heat. Companies often add gel, copper, or phase change materials to try and mask the issue, but once your body heats up the surface (usually within an hour or so), that heat gets trapped and the topper ends up just as warm as the mattress underneath. Memory foam especially is notorious for sleeping hot—whether it’s in the base mattress or in a topper. Even with gel, it’s still memory foam. And the problem is less about the added “cooling” ingredient and more about the fact that foam doesn’t breathe well. If you’re trying to stay with the Emma for motion isolation, a topper might help a bit, but I’d suggest looking at materials that naturally sleep cooler—like latex (specifically ventilated, natural latex), wool, or even something like a wool-and-cotton quilted topper. They won’t give you the same “hug” feel as memory foam, but they breathe much better and won’t trap body heat the same way. Also worth noting: anything you put on top of a hot memory foam mattress is still going to be affected by the trapped heat underneath. So while a topper might help, it’s unlikely to be a full fix if the mattress is the core issue. If you’re stuck between overheating and motion transfer, you might want to test a firmer pocket spring mattress with a latex topper—that combo can give you decent motion isolation and better temperature regulation overall. Hope this helps!

I run ridiculously hot and was contemplating getting an emma mattress, I'm assuming from what you've said emma mattresses don't help with the cooling? Regarding a topper, if you both move during the night, consider looking at London panda bamboo topper. I found that because I don't move the same bit stays warm, however my wife that moves alot kept rolling onto fresh cold patches. Hopefully this may help.
