If you shoot Log on the Canon EOS R5, you should shoot C-Log3. Here's why.: DPReview | Photography News, Gear Reviews & Community
April 7, 2021 - To understand why cameras have different Log profiles, it's worth going back to basics to explain why videographers shoot Log at all. ... In stills photography we generally choose between JPEG files (a small and efficient compressed format but one that has limited editing flexibility), and Raw files (larger but retaining the greatest flexibility).

Difference between picture styles and c-log?
I have never used log profile or color grading. Now I am getting interested in video work. Some questions and problems come to my mind. When it comes to work flow, what is the main difference between c-log and a flat picture style if both need to be kinda color grading? If 8-bit c-log is used... More on dpreview.com

Need help with canon C-Log
I've also had issues, I'm on the EOS R. As a small piece of advice, I've found it's better to overexpose by half a stop in CLOG where possible, as the shadows seem to hold tons of noise. More on reddit.com

C-log 3 vs C-log 2
According to Canon, C-Log 2 gives more dynamic range in shadows, but is slightly noisier as a result. C-Log 3 preserves less shadow detail but has a cleaner noise floor, meaning it's less likely noise reduction is needed in post. The reality is very few Canon cameras carry C-Log 2, and C-Log 3 in theory provides more than enough dynamic range for most canon camera's, apart from those with dual gain output (C70). That being said, C-Log 2 does preserve more information in the shadows, and does permit better shadow recovery! More on reddit.com

What is the difference between Canon Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3?

The original Canon Log delivers a dynamic range of approximately 12 stops, Canon Log 2 up to 16 stops, and Canon Log 3 up to 14 stops. Canon Log 2 retains more detail in darker areas than Canon Log 3 but also features an elevated noise floor. Canon Log 3 is easier to grade thanks to producing a cleaner image and retains the same amount of highlight information as Canon Log 2.

Which Canon Log is best for low light?

Canon Log 2 is the ideal choice for when maximum detail is required, particularly in low-light scenes to extract shadow information. However, it will also cause elevated noise in those darker regions of the image and therefore require more time in post-production.

January 8, 2022 - Log video has a curve that is designed to get the most data out of a sensor and it's the next best thing to raw data. A flat picture style already has some processing. 8 bit video will start banding quicker when you push it and process it too much. You can squeeze out a little extra from a flat picture style but it's not near what you can squeeze out from log.

EOSHD C-LOG and Film Simulation Picture Profiles for Canon - EOSHD.com - Filmmaking Gear and Camera Reviews
May 6, 2024 - I have for months been fine tuning the EOSHD C-LOG Picture Profile on my 1D C, so that all other Canon DSLRs can benefit from it as well. The only difference is that the official Canon 1D C LOG mode has a bit more latitude in the highlights, but they are VERY similar! Also in the deal are a set of film simulation modes, to maximise the superb colour and skintones of the Canon DSLR range.

If you are looking solely for high dynamic range, then LOG2 is the curve for you. For high contrast bright outdoor scenes the LOG 2 curve works really well. I always shoot the LOG2 Cine Gamut preset if using this LOG, as the Cine Gamut gives the greatest colour spectrum for grading.

May 12, 2020 - This all run counter to taking photos, where we are taught to expose for the sky in outdoor scenes and bring back the shadows in lightroom. Think of it this way. If there is noise in the image, you'll want to bring down the shadows to reduce the visibility of the noise, not boost the brightness which will only introduce more noise. In this case the Histogram is your best ...

r/canon on Reddit: What are all the Canon cameras with a Log (1-3) video profile?
October 12, 2022 -

Which Canon DSLRs, Mirrorless, and Cinema cameras have a C-log profile not listed here?

https://www.canon-europe.com/pro/stories/enhance-filmmaking-with-canon-log/

The Canon 1DC I know had C-Log 1, yet it's not listed there (probably because it's old as hell). Not all of the specs are always clear on which cameras have C-log for video and a comprehensive list would be super useful from any of the Canon supernerds out there!

Additional question, does Magic Lantern apply log profiles to cameras that didn't have the profile before? Might wanna get an oldie but goldie and "jailbreak" it and turn in into a video beast (FF preferably).

August 15, 2017 -

Hey lads, I've used C-Log (on a C100) and Cinestyle (on a 6D) before. It's kinda outrageous that Canon is charging cash for what's essentially a picture profile (unless I'm wrong).

Is using Cinestyle on my Mark IV any different from the C-Log they're 'installing'? I do video pretty often and having a flat picture really does help.
