Hi all, I am looking at a relatively decent DAP to access/stream Apple Music. My preference is to use dongle DACs and portable amps (I have the following: ifi Gryphon, FiiO KS17, BTR7, Topping NX7, Hiby FC6 etc..) As such, I think a DAP such as the FiiO M11 Plus would be overkill. I read on here that the Shanling M3X and the Sony 306(?) might be a good streamer/storage type player. Im looking for the best option, where I am not paying for the DAC/amp elements of the DAP. Line out or SPID would be a huge plus.

You should know that recently a lot of Android-based DAPs (like my Hiby R5) suddenly won't work with Apple Music. This is a development within the last week or so. There may be a workaround (I'm new to Android devices myself), but do your research about this.

I feel like you are a little confused? E.g... I am looking at a relatively decent DAP to access/stream Apple Music. My preference is to use dongle DACs and portable amps So which is it? Do you want a DAP or a dongle DAC + Amp setup? There are DAPs, which contain DAC + Amp and are capable of storing/streaming/playing music files. Then there are DAC/Amp all-in-one units that only serve as such and need to have a connected device that is capable of sending audio files through it in some form or fashion. Then there is separate DAC and Amp units that are used to facilitate a more modular setup. Then there are dongle DACs and Amps. However, with your above comment, it seems like you are mixing up a few of the above types of audio equipment. Are you looking for a DAP (i.e. MP3/FLAC/etc..) player that can store or stream music from streaming services? Or are you looking for a dongle DAC + small Amp setup to use in conjunction with you phone or laptop?

Was looking at the Sony A306 but have seen some on here say there are issues with playing Apple Music hi-res/192 lossless files through the app.
Considering a separate device to use with some nice older Shure SE IEMs. Just really starting out with hi res music. Not really keen on redoing my entire music library as separate FLAC files - want to stick with Apple Music ideally.

The issue with Sony DAPs is they do do not have system-wide Android bypass, so hi-res content gets resampled. Whether that matters is subjective. It probably makes a very, very subtle difference, if at all. But if you're like a lot of us and chasing pefection as a hobby... An alternative would be either the Hiby R5G2 or the FiiO M11S. Both will do apple music and play bitperfect. I have the Hiby. It's a lower spec'd snapdragon and older Andorid. So it's ever so slightly laggy compared to the 660/665 devices. The FiiO has a 660 chip and Android 10. But it's slightly bulkier than the Hiby.

I have the 306. It supports Apple formats. Personally, I have not tried AAC files, but ALAC files work just fine.

IMO apple music is the best streaming software for CD quality and hi-res lossless audio, but the actual hardware that is able to take advantage of this quality can't even be used with the software. Does anyone have any idea on when or if Apple will add support for these daps?

Apple Music should work on Android based DAPs and if it is a DAP that has some sort of audio bypass it should give bitperfect audio. The only DAP that Apple makes is the iPod Touch so if you are referring to that then who knows what their plans for the future of that device will be or whether it even has a long-term future. Apple took the decision to remove the headphone jack from their mobile devices in favour of the push for wireless and I doubt that they would backtrack on that now. In the future they may look to develop new wireless standards or codecs but that is pure speculation. For now if you want Hi-Res with Apple Music on an Apple device then your only option is an external DAC (even the Apple dongle DAC can't do Hi-Res). Whether you really need Hi-Res is a different debate but I accept that because it is offered people will want it.

DAPs are more for convenience. I used to use dongles myself tethered to my phone. I found it annoying whenever I wanted to use my phone, plus it drained the battery.
I’m now using a R6P2 for home use and M300 for when I’m out. I personally find having a separate device for music, keeping my phone free of wires, liberating and preferable. But it’s really down to preference.
Do they sound better? Maybe a tad, but you can get some really good high end dongles now.
Oh, and you can also use streaming apps on my DAPs as they’re android based. I use Qobuz, and it works great. Apple Music would work fine too.

I am using New Hiby R6 (R6 2020) with Snapdragon 660 SoC. Apple Music hi-res lossless perfectly output through USB. Fyi I am also using the DAP as digital transport.

Hello. I'm looking to get a budget DAP to use with a B&W px8, as I heard DAP have better sound quality compared to traditional phones. I am currently using an iPhone 12 mini and I want to listen to Apple Music wirelessly with aptxHD. I am currently looking at the HiBy R3II.
Budget is around 250 dollars. All help is appreciated.

Fun fact - DAP will not affect sound quality of bluetooth headphones. All audio hardware DAPs have (and you pay for) is only used when you use analog/wired output. Different BT codec may do something, but apple's implementation of AAC is very good and you are unlikely to hear a difference. If you still want to buy something - hiby m300. Compared to r4 it has newer android, is smaller, cheaper and the only advantages of r4 are in analog output you are not going to use. Alternatively - a cheap android phone will give you all that + lower price, better hardware and software updates.

August 28, 2024 - An iPhone source will be as good as it gets. From what I've read so far the airpods max will always use the built in DAC and amp, so any quality improvement is basically impossible. I doubt you can find something that isn't a smartphone that's also less laggy than a Sony android DAP.
