brother is def the way to go. way better than dealing with inkjet bs. just watch out - some newer brother models have chipped toner to block third-party cartridges. you might be able to swap the chip from oem to generic ones, or just don't update the firmware when it asks. canon's solid too. toner lasts forever compared to ink and doesn't dry up if you don't use it for a while. wifi setup can be annoying but works fine after. you can also check this list i made a while back, might help. My girl friend of mine is looking at a multifunction laser printer and I was hoping someone could give me some suggestions on what is decent. She is not very computer savvy and just wants something not too big, that can print several hundred sheets one time, and that is reliable and simple to use. My girl doesn't want colour and under $700.

I have not bought a printer in ages, I don't have the experience to choose at this time, can somebody help me, any suggestions would be welcome.

I’m finally done with cheap inkjet drama and want to switch to something more reliable. I’m looking for the best laser printer for home use that can handle regular document printing, occasional forms, maybe the odd ticket or label, without needing constant toner replacements or random “printhead cleaning” rituals. I don’t need anything super fancy, but built-in WiFi, decent print speed and not having it jam every other week would be nice. For those of you who made the switch from inkjet to laser at home, what did you buy and are you still happy with it after a year or two? Any brands or models you’d avoid, or things you wish you had known (like toner cost, driver issues, noise, size) before buying?

Edit: After reading the comments, I found a guide that helped me compare toner costs and long term reliability. Sharing it here in case it helps anyone else: home laser printer guide.

Laser printers are more capable of printing clearer Word documents at higher volumes. They are more expensive than inkjet printers, which is one you may wonder if you can afford them in your home office.
While working at home may present some financial constraints on the equipment that you use, it doesn’t mean you can’t get yourself a laser printer.

Brother? Any other good brand?

We have curated a list of laser printers that can serve you well despite the lack of space and/ or budget:

1. Canon Color ImageClass MF656Cdw

2. Brother MFC -L2750DW

Wirecutter (see link below) recommends the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP. But, I’ve heard a lot of complaints about HP printers from others in this community.

https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-laser-printer/

I’ve heard good things about Brother in general, but am looking to hear some recommendations about a few I’ve specifically had my eye on:

  1. HL-L3290CDW (Doesn’t look like this has a feeder that would allow for scanning multiple pages at a time. It’s not a must-have for me but could be nice)

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll3290cdw

2. MFC-L3750CDW

3. HL-L8360CDW (Doesn’t even look like it has a scanner)

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/HLL8360CDW

4. MFC-L8905CDW

I want to get a new printer because my current inkjet printer seems to be having more and more issues lately, and the ink dries up before we even get halfway through the cartridge. Which is saying something considering I have used this printer for college.

I would like a laser all-in-one printer (although fax is optional) that does color. I would say my price limit would be about $700. And prefferably something that will fit on my desk and not end up taller than I am. I dont really have brand preferences, but I have had tons of bad experiences with HP products, so I would like to avoid that brand unless people are really confident in a certain model.

Any suggestions?

I’m trying to put together a small home office and I’m a bit stuck on the printer part. I want the best laser printer that can also scan and copy, since I deal with contracts, tax stuff, and random paperwork a few times a month. I don’t need full-on corporate level gear, but I do want something that feels solid, connects easily over WiFi, and doesn’t choke if I print a 30 page document. Duplex (double-sided) printing would be a big plus. If you run a small business or work from home, which laser all-in-one are you using and would you actually recommend it? I’d love to hear how it’s been in real life in terms of toner costs, reliability and how annoying (or not) the software and setup were.

Hi all,

I am in the market for a great printer. My print frequency is 10-20 pages per day / 365. I've bought most brands but it seems they all kinda fail quicker. Any suggestions?!

Doesn’t get much better than a Brother B/W Laser Printer. A vast majority of people agree. Just pick one. Do your homework though and look at the specifics. Tray Capacity, PPM, Wireless vs USB, and whether it’s important to you that it prints on both sides of the paper to cut down on paper cost. I personally went with a multi function Brother B/W Laser Printer with auto feed scanner that can scan both sides of the paper because I scan a bit and that makes it much more convenient for me that way as well as fax. If you scan based on what I saw it makes sense to combine these functions. That and take a look at the toner cartridges just to see how much those will cost you and which sizes it will take. Mine is big enough that the highest capacity toner cartridges will print an estimated 8500 pages and save a bit a money that way as well. I personally don’t buy the generic toner and only the Brother toner cartridges so from what I’ve seen Office Depot often has deals on toner.

I've been very happy with my Brother lasers. I have an old B/W that has been chuging along for well over 15 years. I bought their color laser multi-fuction duplex two years ago as an upgrade. It's awesome. The dual side scanning is so easy. The printing is great. We love the wireless printing from any device in the house. It doesn't do a good job printing photos. But on the other hand, we don't use photo paper, and it isn't a photo printer. So if I really need a photo printed, I can use Costco or some other printing services. Those guys have professional grade photo printers.

Hey Reddit,

I’m tired of running to the library or office store every time I need to print something. I don’t need anything fancy, just a reliable printer for home use that can handle documents, the occasional photo, and doesn’t cost me a fortune in ink.

There are so many options — inkjet, laser, all-in-one — and I’m not sure which one makes the most sense for home. Has anyone here found a good home printer that actually lasts and doesn’t drive you crazy?

Here’s what I’ve learned while researching 👇

✅ Best Printers for Home Use

  1. Brother HL-L2350DW (Laser, Monochrome)

    • Fast, reliable, and cheap to run.

    • Great if you mostly print text/documents.

    • Not for color, but toner lasts way longer than ink.

  2. Canon PIXMA TR8620a (Inkjet All-in-One)

    • Prints, scans, copies, faxes.

    • Solid photo printing quality.

    • Ink can get pricey, but great if you need color.

  3. HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e

    • Smart all-in-one with wireless printing.

    • Works well for home offices (color + documents).

    • Compatible with HP Instant Ink subscription (saves money if you print often).

  4. Epson EcoTank ET-2850 (SuperTank Inkjet)

    • Refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges → super cheap per page.

    • Excellent long-term value for moderate to heavy use.

    • Higher upfront cost, but saves money in the long run.

  5. Brother MFC-J4335DW (Inkjet, Budget-Friendly)

    • Affordable, compact, and efficient.

    • Good balance between price, performance, and ink usage.

    • Not as sharp as a laser printer, but versatile.

⚖️ What to Consider Before Buying a Home Printer

  • Laser vs Inkjet → Laser = best for text-heavy docs. Inkjet = better for color/photos.

  • Running Costs → Check ink/toner prices, not just the printer price.

  • All-in-One Features → Do you need scanning/copying?

  • Wireless Printing → Most new printers support Wi-Fi & mobile printing.

  • Usage Volume → Occasional printing vs frequent home office use makes a big difference.

🏆 Final Recommendations

  • Best Budget Monochrome: Brother HL-L2350DW

  • Best All-in-One Inkjet: Canon PIXMA TR8620a

  • Best Smart Home Office Printer: HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e

  • Best Long-Term Value: Epson EcoTank ET-2850

  • Best Compact Option: Brother MFC-J4335DW
