r/rpg_gamers on Reddit: Open world RPGs with good exploration including dungeons etc
September 24, 2024 -
Can anyone recommend open world RPGs on PC that involve really great exploration? One of the reasons I love the Elder Scrolls games so much is the ability to just pick a direction and run, and you always know you’ll stumble upon something interesting - be it fun side quests, hidden dungeons, etc - there’s a big open world with tons of shit to explore. I would really love to find more games that replicate that. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I’m just forever going to recommend Kingdom Come: Deliverance when someone asks for an open world game. It’s incredibly immersive, the world feels alive and the people in it genuinely react to your actions/behaviour in the world. You won’t find much in the way of typical dungeons here but there are lots of interesting places to discover, people to meet, quests to embark on and enemies to kill. Edit: Also for those that really want to get sucked into the game, I highly recommend Hardcore mode, it’s not that much more difficult but it is more immersive.

Kingdoms of Amalur Gedonia Enderal Two Worlds 1 & 2 Piranha Bytes games Chronicles of Myrtana Greedfall (semi-open actually, but the zones are the biggest of all Spiders games) Sacred 1 & 2 Xenoblade (linear plot, but still one of the most open-ended jRPGs in terms of customization and exploration) Pillars of Eternity 2 Edge of Eternity (albeit having a linear plot) SaGa series

Are there any open world fantasy rpgs on the scale of the elder scrolls?
There's also Dragon's Dogma which has a big open world and some damn good combat. While not exactly fantasy, the more modern Assassin's Creed games could count as historical fantasy RPGs, namely Valhalla and Odyssey. In all honesty though, none of them quite match up to Skyrim. More on reddit.com

The 24 Biggest Open Worlds In RPGs Ever, From Smallest To Largest
March 8, 2023 - Games in this series tend to focus more on story and atmosphere than sheer world size, and, in doing so, manage to feel much larger than some games several times their size. 2012’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an interesting gem which was somewhat overshadowed by all of the other terrific high fantasy role-playing games we had been treated to during that time.

5 Open-World Games You’ll Play for Hours Without Realizing
November 22, 2025 - Honestly, most of its games are great time-wasters, particularly the first two Gothic RPGs and Risen 2: Dark Waters; however, they are acquired tastes with pretty notable downsides. Although not the developer's crowning achievement, Elex 2 is the best option for newcomers who are mostly craving a fresh-feeling world to escape to. The story and characters are not great, but they never need to be to make an open-world worth playing. Elex 2 blends sci-fi and fantasy by featuring a nature-dominated post-apocalyptic world while giving you an exoskeleton that can fly and guns to shoot.
