I’ve have or have had the 5” and 6” 5mm orbit Mirka Deros a , 5” 5mm ceros, a couple ets 125’s , an ets/ec 125 , Rotex 90 and 150 and used a 125, a Bosch devs dual mode and a bunch of other Porter cables and Makitas. I have also used a slew of other sanders including pneumatic da sanders and sheet sanders . I think the ets/ec 125 is the most comfortable and the Mirka Deros right behind them with their only downsides being the fact you have to hold the paddle down and getting parts or repairs in the US is difficult. Rotex series of sanders are great for heavy removal and not bad for fine sanding, but very tiresome for extended sanding sessions. Answer from Solowcarpenter on reddit.com

My rule with tools is buy the cheapest tool with the features you need and use that until it breaks once that happens then I'm using it enough to buy a really nice one. My DeWalt palm sander is definitely on it's way out so now I'm thinking a nice ROS but don't want to throw my money on a tool that isn't any better.
Any benefits for festool 574993 vs say the Makita BO5041K for half the price? Any other recommendations?

The Festool sander was mentioned the other day (sorry I can’t find the reply), but they mentioned it really cuts down on the vibration in your hand and doesn’t feel as bad after a lot of sanding. I do the same thing with tools when it doesn’t sacrifice precision, if I use it enough to break it, I deserve a better one.

I purchased the Festool Pro 5 LTD when is was offered at 99.00. its a fantastic tool and significantly better than a similarly priced dewalt. Honestly it did exactly what the promotion was indented to do. It introduced me to the real quality that Festool produces, and while I will not buy all Festool tools, there are a few critical tools ( tracksaw, router and domino ) that are in my future purchase plans) I also watch for refurbished units being sold since they carry the Festool warranty and a significantly more reasonable price tag .

Over the past year I have started taking on more refinishing jobs. I primarily go entry gates and teak furniture. I have always used Bosch sanders which I find work best, compared to Dewalt and Milwaukee, for what I do.
I am starting a very detailed/intricate gate that is my most ambitious project yet. I’ve been told that the Festool sanders can cut down sanding time by about %30. With efficiency like that it seems like Festool tools would pay for themselves relatively fast.
So, are they worth it?

If you're keen to throw that kind of money at a sander just go with the Mirka and be done with it.

If you have any kind of production work going on for you or your help, they cut down on vibration and fatigue dramatically as well as work faster and better. They are the only Festool products I feel are worth the cost.
