I'm going to list some native plants. Though California is a long state and the climate shifts dramatically from place to place, so do a little research on anything that seems right, so you know if it meets your needs where you live. Manzanita -evergreen, they have beautiful flowers, beautiful bark and are relatively nest. You're not gonna get unsightly growth patterns. They also attract pollinators abd humming birds. Drought tolerant, and hardy from the desert to the coast. There's a ton of variety too, one of them will fit your needs. Utah Serviceberry -native to the West, growing anywhere from mountains to drier scrubland. It isn't evergreen. But it does have lovely white flowers in the season and bears edible fruit. The birds will happily take them if you don't. It is tolerant to both drought and frost. It can grow tall if allowed. Toyon -attractive shrub, it is an evergreen. It blooms small white flowers that become bright red fruit. It resembles a holly bush and is sometimes called California Holly. It's very hardy, growing in chaparral scrub or mountains or coastal hills. The fruit is considered mildly toxic unless it's cooked, and are unpalatable and astringent raw. Native birds like them plenty, and it attracts Butterflies as well. Mountain Mohoganies There are many! It is not actual mahogany, but they are beautiful shrubs. Island mohogany will give you a very classic hedge look but with a native plant. They have pretty blooms with a mild scent and the fruit looks like it has feathers. They thrive in high altitudes and tolerate a dry climate. There are species that stay scrubby and others that are whole trees. So find the one you like. Ceanothus Sometimes called California lilac, they have extremely showy blooms! Most are evergreen, and there are a lot of species to choose from. The most popular ones for landscaping are the ones with the showiest flowers. They are fragrant and sweet smelling. Birds, including quail will eat the seeds. And if you're in a place with high wildlife traffic... deer will eat the flowers and sometimes the leaves. So word of caution, it's a snack plant for wildlife. Some are hardier against deer than others, and there are actually hybrids abd cultivars bred for ornaments purposes. So have at Silk Tassel Bush Big evergreen shrub. It's a nice, tidy shrub that does well in landscaping. Leaves are bright green and the make blooms have long catkins, where it's name comes from. They make nice windbreaks as well as privacy screens. I think schipp laurels are a good option as they will impeded your lawn less than the recommended green giants and leylands. Both of which grow 12-15 wide and 50 tall. You will lose a lot of your lawn space with either of these over time. If you don’t mind something that loses it leaves in the winter, Arrowwood viburnum can work as well. Much less expensive then all the other options mentioned. Tolerates pruning very well and can be kept inside your existing bedline over time. More on reddit.com

My favorite is elbow bush especially since you get alot of shade. I would include mt laurel and tx persimmon as those are also found in shade. Please cut and tarp the nandina, its invasive and becoming a problem in natural areas. More on reddit.com
