Best cordless tool system - garden and DIY — MoneySavingExpert Forum
March 26, 2022 - Buy a decent multi starter set with batteries, and you can add bare tools for not a huge amount of money. ... I also use Ryobi and haven't experienced any problems with them. The only one's I would avoid is those 'own brands' sold by DIY sheds. They may be perfectly good pieces of kit but I'd be more concerned about them discontinuing and batteries etc not being available long term. ... For the garden I would not bother with power tools if its a medium hedge in good condition a set of garden shears and a file for keeping them sharp would do a better job and as it is a small lawn a push mower would do,especially if previous owner has left it in good order, all you would need to learn is setting the correct height of blades to suit conditions and time of the season.

r/DIYUK on Reddit: Best cordless system for garden tools
September 14, 2023 -

We've just moved to a new house which has a very long and overgrown garden, so I've been looking at cordless garden tools (don't want to deal with petrol, and corded tools probably wouldn't reach to the bottom of the garden).

Eventually, I will probably need a lawn mower, pole saw, brush cutter and strimmer, leaf blower, possibly a chain saw. I don't want to buy these all at once, but what I think would be a good idea (for cost reasons) is to buy into a single cordless system.

So I am looking for reviews/recommendations of the various brands that have cordless systems. Green works, titan, ryobi, stihl, worx, makita... Any others?

What's what with these brands? Which are worth buying into?

Can't really go wrong with Makita. Not the cheapest, but common, good quality, and a really wide range of tools to go with the batteries and chargers - especially if you're going to want tools for other jobs too, like drills and saws and stuff.

As a professional handyman who does some regular garden maintenance I use Einhell: Lawnmower - I use the smaller one with the solid plastic tray. You can jog around with it. Very light and manoeuvrable. To change cut height you have to adjust all 4 wheels but it's seconds of a job. Hedge trimmer - better than my old mains one - it manages thicker branches. I also use it a bit like a brush cutter for clearance down to ground level of long grass and small plants. Excellent blade cover. Strimmer - uses plastic blades which wear out quickly on hard surfaces (edging near walls) but I got 50 off eBay cheaply. It compacts really well for transport. Chainsaw - 23cm. A top tool. So much safer to use than bigger ones. Felled a few small trees including oaks. Also use it for building work to cut 6x2s and bigger. Good blade cover. Tree lopper (small chainsaw on a pole) - effective but very ungainly to use. Scarifier (36V) - effective but grass collection is rubbish (fills up in seconds) - just wedge the rear gate open then rake it all up. When I switched to cordless I chose Einhell because they had the most comprehensive set of tools (that included gardening ones). I have over 20 and a dozen or so batteries. I tend to get kits (with batt & charger) when they're on offer.

June 3, 2025 - Coincidentally I was out doing the hedges this morning with my cordless Makita trimmer. So quick and easy to set up and work without needing a power cord extension etc. I own x5 5ah Makita batteries and x3 6ah knock offs. Probably a bit overkill, but if the wife and I are both working in the garden we can burn through batteries - especially the lawnmower.

On the other hand, the power tool brands that have entered the lawn and garden market, are well-versed in cordless technology, with decades of experience.
