If the confusion is simply with the variable names being used, rather than trying to assign a direction of each part of the symbol, consider only the location of each part of the symbol. Imagine that there's an empty box being bisected in each direction by a line. The line running vertically has two halves, "up" and "down" and the line running horizontally has two halves, "left" and "right." The name of each symbol being used in the code is which halves of each line are visible. In other words, rather than "the line pointing downward" for "down", think of "the vertical line below the center point." More on reddit.com
