r/bose on Reddit: Boss soundwave generation, remote & Bluetooth?
July 29, 2023 -

Hey, I got this for free and don't own any speaker myself, I know Bose's considered a good brand but my knowledge sort of ends right there. I tried googling the serial number and came up empty-handed, so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out.

The sound's great by my standards, that's all fine, but which generation of Bose wave is it ? It's also missing a remote, so I'd need that and, I believe , a Bluetooth adapter for me to play music off my phone.

I searched for adapters for this, there were a load of different ones and I'm trying to avoid buying the wrong one. Does this thing need an adapter or is it already inherently Bluetooth compatible?

And if anyone could give me any pointers as to if and where to get a cheap adapter and remote, as well as any other worthwhile information I should know, that would be great, thanks!

You either have a Wave Music System (aka WMS) sold from 2004 until 2012 or a Wave Music System III (aka WMS III) sold from 2012 to 2015. My parents have a couple of WMS systems throughout their house. They are good speakers. It does not have Bluetooth built-in but AM/FM radio & 3.5mm AUX. As for Bluetooth. That's possible through the AUX with some 3rd party devices . Yet Bose did sell a device called the Wave SoundLink adapter (aka Wave SoundLink upgrade kit ) and then later the Wave Bluetooth Music Adapter . They are the same device just one comes with a power plug and the other does not (well the SoundLink one does include a PC Bluetooth USB dongle)... If you read the Wave Bluetooth Music Adapter Amazon page , it says: Compatible Devices 2010 or later Bose WAVE Music System III, WAVE Music System, WAVE Radio III and Acoustic WAVE Music System II models I learnt this the hard way. During a move, we couldn't figure out why the WMS would not work with the Bluetooth adapter as it was working before. We found out that one wave was made before 2010 and the other was after 2010. They got swapped around and we found out that Waves Before 2010 could not power the Bluetooth adapter and needed an external power supply. Yet swapping the waves around quickly solved the issue. So for clarity, that Amazon Listing really should have said: Compatible Devices WAVE Music System III, WAVE Radio III, 2010 or later WAVE Music System, and 2010 or later Acoustic WAVE Music System II We also discovered if you have the WMS III it can not only power the Bluetooth adapter and iPod dock . But it also could power the SoundTouch pedestal . So, if you have a WMS III, it will work with the first-generation SoundTouch pedestal (it has a silver plate on the front and is slightly flat on the top). This connects to your WiFi and adds SoundTouch (Internet radio & different streaming services depending on your region ), & Airplay 1 ... but no Bluetooth. Yet the SoundTouch IV pedestal (it has a black plate on the front and concaved in on the top) DOES have Bluetooth (along with SoundTouch and Airplay 2 )... but I have not known anyone who has tried this pedestal with a WMS III... My theory is this is a cosmetic difference and nothing more. Yet I am unsure.

Control a Bose Wave Radio with a Universal Remote | Sheryl's Blog
Sorry correction…it is not a wave radio it is the old 3 in 1 system. Bose sells a universal remote for 14.95. That sounds new. Some of Bose equipment uses infrared and some uses radio remote. I doubt this universal remote does both. Does it? Or is it universal to Bose’s newer equipment? I just found an app in the Google play store that controls 100% of the functions on the Bose Wave Music System.

r/assholedesign on Reddit: $500 Bose wave system. No buttons. Lose the $1 remote control, can’t operate it.
August 7, 2018 - I have an early BOSE Wave that has buttons on top. I've had it for over a decade and I absolutely love it. Oh yeah, I lost the remote within the 1st month of getting it but hey, it works perfectly fine without it. ... Or get the app for you phone. Or don’t spend $500 on a sound system in the first place.

Remote won't control music app - Wave® music system III
Certain music programs only allow the remote to control it when the application is selected and in the foreground on your computer. When using the SoundLink USB key, your computer prioritizes playback controls for Windows Media Player (WMP) or iTunes. If either is open and you are trying to use a different audio app, close WMP or iTunes. The system is designed to send basic AVRCP commands from the system to the SoundLink/Wave Bluetooth®, which control the basic transport controls of the playback program running on the PC or Mac.
