Does anyone have experience buying an online business?

Yep, loads, pm me any specific questions you have.

Short version. Don't buy a business on its strengths unless you are a passive investor. Buy a business on its weaknesses of you want to flip it.

Stupid people go for the sites with good revenue for the traffic and you'll over pay for something you could build yourself in 6 months. Smart people go for the sites with flaws, obvious areas for growth as the crowd dismiss them.

Best case though is to find something outside of these auction sites via networking or research. I picked up a manufacturing business a few years back for absolutely peanuts just after they got hammered by a Google update, previous form was meaningless a in the face of 0 traffic - it's doing 6 figures a year now and employs 4 people.

I buy, sell and run websites and Internet businesses for a living, as well as run an online brokerage. Sold $7 Million worth of websites in 2014 โ€“ AMA!

If you're starting over tomorrow with only $500 and your knowledge (no contact list), what's your plan to start generating revenue?

Whatโ€™s the catch with buying an online business?
As someone that consistently purchases and sells new websites every few months, I can say that roughly 97% of websites on Flippa fall into one of the 3 categories: Owner has already squeezed everything out of the website and the only place for it to go is downhill. At best you're going to run the same exact metrics website had, do it for a few months, before it starts declining. It's complete bullshit, none of the data is real, traffic is purchased or faked using different methods, etc. Owner of the website isn't valuing the business well, expecting way too much for what he / she built. Example - owner of a website generating $100/mo and barely paying for itself, has a reserve of $10,000, essentially making evaluation of the website based on it's potential in the future instead of it's current state. That said, occasionally there are decent businesses you can find, but due dilligence is key. Don't take everything an owner says for granted, do your own extensive research. If you want to go beyond that - start looking at potential ways of growing the website in order to see returns faster or potentially resell website in the future. As for the reasoning behind people selling their websites, it could be many different things: They have grown it as much as they can without a huge financial investment, knowing that it could be grown much more by someone else that is more capable to do it. A lot of people look at their business as their baby and just seeing it grow, even if it's done by someone else, brings them a lot of joy; In need of monetary assets within the next few months (investing into the next venture, unexpected medical bills, morthgage payments, losing their job, whatever else you can think of); They got bored of the business / weren't interested in the industry in the first place; No longer have time to take care of the business; Starting a different business; Many other reasons. Too many to list on here. I'm personally interested in affiliate / lead-gen websites, since it's something I've been doing for a while. I know exactly what to look for, what to avoid, what red flags there could be. In most cases I purchase these sites in the range of 18x-25x their monthly revenue, because I know I can grow it a lot. If the website is being sold at 5x-15x or even further below that - I'd avoid it at all costs, unless profit margins are extremely thin (which is never the case for the type of businesses I purchase, where primary traffic channels are organic and free). If you go to a platform such as Empire Flippers, you get a much better quality of websites, most of them would be legit, but still do your own due dilligence. That said - you will end up spending more, because an average website there sells for 30-35x multiple. I prefer to buy my businesses for lower multiple, increase their value by 10-15 times within a few years, then re-sell at a greater multiple because of a much stronger foundation that was built for it. Most of these sales are private, without having to list it anywhere, but I have sold on Empire Flippers before. I either get offers from competitors / business owners in the same industry that want to monetize my traffic or I reach out to them myself. I'm not really interested in growing businesses past a certain point, because the returns from that wouldn't match ones I could get from taking on 2-3 new projects and growing them instead. Want to buy Online businesses.

What is your budget with this? If you're in the mid / high 6 figure range or low 7 figure range, we could discuss several opportunities.

Anyway, for low cost online businesses you should check out Flippa, for more expensive ones that are actually vetted properly - Empire Flippers.
