r/AskNYC on Reddit: Good Inexpensive thrift stores in nyc?
February 27, 2022 -

I’ve been to a few thrift stores and I’m noticing that some of them are a bit pricey 😅

For example, The places I’ve checked out seem to price shirts (plain random shirts, not designer or anything) at like tjmaxx comparable prices..

I’ve been to a few Goodwills that were DECENT, but the one in Brooklyn is getting crazy with their prices (they’ve made the store to appeal more to those who just thrift for trends, but what about people who actually can’t afford other many options than thrifting??), and I tried Buffalo Exchanges but they’re not really worth it in my opinion

What are some good thrift stores that have actually good prices?

I'm fond of Le Point Value on the corner of Flushing + knickerbocker. disorganized as hell but I've found some of my fave wardrobe staples there over the years. Around the corner is L Train, there's a huge huge huge one and then a smaller one with mostly designer/trendy vintage/Adidas tracksuits (?) The small one is overpriced as hell, but the big one is great if you're looking for something specific, like a sweater, or jeans, or a German military jacket, or an 80's beaded and sequin shirt with shoulder pads (why are there so many of these?). It's super organized. as a bonus, there's a greek place down the street from both of these called Yia Yia's which is LEGIT. Answer from Keeganwherefore on reddit.com

I’ve lived in New York City for 17 years now and I recently got into thrifting. I live in manhattan and thrifting is really bad there, overpriced, etc. Even the recommended stores like L Train on 14th. I’ve seen some better prices in queens and brooklyn, but i have little experience there. What are some thrift store recommendations that are better priced and/or more obscure?

You just have to hit as many as you can to find your spots. There are tons of spots in Brooklyn and Queens. I'd start going down the list. YMMV on what appeals to you. Are you looking for designers? Vintage? Cheap deals? Some places have less man presenting options so that would be a factor. What is overpriced to you? If you are talking cheap cheap, you might want to be going to the bins. What did you not like about L Train? I think L Train is a good spot. They have a lot of locations so worth checking out different ones. Their Urban Jungle location usually hits: https://www.ltrainvintagenyc.com/new-page-3 There are many stores in Manhattan with a lot of variety. Not all of them are overpriced or "bad." I like the Goodwills in Manhattan. I find them to be well priced, especially with half price tags, and a lot of good finds. And they have a rewards program. But I usually find with some digging and patience, most stores will have some good stuff, as if the nature of thrifting. Depending on what you are looking for, I would add Domsey Express to the list. Le Point as well. Other People's Clothes too. Also, the GANAS thrift store on SI, Everything Goes https://www.etgstores.com/ If you can get out of town, there are some great spots all around us too. The reality here is that both the buyers and sellers are much more informed than many other parts of the country. You're not gonna find amazing steals on name-brand pieces that granny putting in her 8 hours a week to keep busy didn't recognize and mispriced quite as easily. There are still nice deals to be found, but they'll be just "deals" relative to what you're looking at and not "steals". Bargains thrive on information asymmetry and people working even thrift retail in NYC are generally pretty well informed about fair market price for what they're looking at.

I’ve just been noticing a lot of places calling themselves vintage clothing resellers with a lot of the same complaints of expensive prices and mediocre service So I wondered if there are still any reasonable thrift stores or cheap consignment shops in the borough and if not, in other places in the city

Domsey Express has pretty low prices; there’s one in Williamsburg and another in Bushwick. Chain shops like Goodwill, Buffalo Exchange, Salvation Army, and Housing Works, and L Train Vintage are all still reasonable compared to the overpriced boutiques you see nowadays. When I lived on the UES I always went to Unique Boutique on 3rd Ave and found a lot of brand name stuff for under $20 — it’s been a few years tho so maybe the prices have gone up.

A few of my favorite spots are... 28 Scott Vintage / East Williamsburg Middle of the road prices but very well curated, has a younger/cooler vibe and fun homeware. Feels more like a boutique than a thrift store which is my preference. Vintage Thrift Shop / Gramercy The clothing is highly curated and still great prices considering it's in Manhattan, I've found really great Vince stuff there. You'll need to dig but it is good for accessories and homeware too. More on the vintage/antique side though, less thrifty. Awoke / Greenpoint I always find something cute here and they are smaller so you're able to go through the whole store in 10 min. Fun accessories. And most importantly nice/clean dressing rooms. L Train Vintage / East Williamsburg Need to go in here with a mission since it can be overwhelming if you aren't looking for something in particular. But huge selection with decent prices. References / NYC They are online only but they collect clothes from New Yorkers for resell, so again highly curated and priced better than most vintage/thrift stores. Found a lot of unique pieces here and didn't have to dig through racks all day.

Are there any cheap thrift stores in the city that have prices comparable to thrift stores outside of NYC? I feel like the ones in the city charge way more than your average thrift shop.

Edit: Wow I did not expect this to get so much attention! Thanks everyone!

My wife and I and our 16 year old son are coming to visit NYC next month. We love to thrift, especially our son. Is there a specific area that has a lot of thrifting near each other? What are your favorite NYC thrifts in general?

Hey all,

Heading to New York for the first time in my adult life next week, and I was hoping for some good store recommendations to check out. Not really looking for Bape/Supreme/Palace-esque stores. I'd likely be more interested in good thrifting/secondhand/vintage places, but of course down to hear some must-see stores that are selling new clothes as well.

Thanks in advance!

Best Clothing Thrift Stores in NYC
Buffalo Exchange seems like the cheapest of the fancy "thrift" stores and I've gotten a few incredible jackets for 20 bucks that I've been wearing for years. Beacon's Closet is... okay, but has only gotten worse over the years. ... Check out NYC Vintage Map app and their Thrift category!

May 14, 2022 - Thrift shopping in NYC doesn’t really exist anymore, it’s “vintage” shopping and you should expect to pay low-mid tier fashion prices. A lot of the stores will be selling archive fashion which can often be more than new pieces from the same designer.

I'm looking for thrift stores that have clothing for men. I don't care about the brand, I just want something that I can wear and I couldn't find it in the major brand stores like Aeropostale, American eagle, etc. where is your go-to place for clothing? some things that I'm looking for: server pants/top (server attire), maybe a few tank tops or muscle shirts, and athletic wear (sports, gym, pants, shirts, etc). Any Recommendations? Brooklyn preferably but I can travel to anywhere in NYC.

r/malefashionadvice on Reddit: Guide to thrifting in NYC!
March 19, 2018 -

NYC in my opinion is the best city in the US to thrift in. The high concentration of very wealthy and fashionable people means that the chances of finding something incredible are much higher than in your average city. Ive found a shit ton of good stuff, both for myself and for resell. Ive probably made about $10,000 off of stuff that I have resold this year. If you're curious what I've found check out my insta @thriftopher!

Here are some general tips.

  • Go early, but not too early Don't go right when the store opens, because usually they haven't put the new stuff out yet. I generally go about an hour after opening time just to be safe.

  • Know where the put new items Most shops have a method for how the put new items on the rack, figure it out and your life will be a lot easier.

  • If you don't see anything you like leave Best advice you'll get honestly. Its never a good idea to buy something just to buy it, you'll save money and time by leaving without getting anything. I probably get something 20% of the time i got into a shop.

  • Go frequently Its better to go once a day for 5 min than to go once a week and stay for half an hour.

  • Avoid the weekend Its generally more crowded, more picked over and the trains are worse.

Heres a guide to my top 5 Shops.

Shop Adress Guide Tips Types of things you will find there
Beacons Closet Manhattan 10 W 13th St Honestly the best shop in the city in my opinion. Really good selection of both hyped stuff and high fashion. A bit on the pricier side as far as thrift shops go, but the prices are cheap enough that I still consider it a thrift store not a consignment shop. I can almost always find something worth keeping or reselling every day I come here. On weekdays try to get in before 3-4pm because It tends to get pretty crowded. Pants are hard to find here, because mens+woman's pants are not separated. Focus on tees, sweatshirts and shoes. They have it all. Supreme, Archive CDG, Rick Owens +More
L Train Vintage Manhattan 204 1st Avenue Great semi-curated vintage shop. Most shirts around $5-10. Store is jammed full clothes, so make sure to check upstairs + downstairs. Pretty Self explanatory shop, again try shopping early on weekdays, because it'll be crowded on weekend and afternoons. Make sure to look downstairs at the windbreaker/jackets section. Also have a great selection of jeans, and you can probably pick of a pair of vintage Levi's in your size for $10-15 Vintage Polo, Vintage nike gear, Vintage nike sneakers.
Tokio 7 83 E 7th St This is basically Grailed if it had a real store. They do their research and price things at what they're really worth. Generally a great selection of really nice things, but not cheap. They have a good selection of Japanese brands and have a pretty good selection of hyped stuff as well. This is basically like buying from a reseller without worrying about getting scammed and fakes. Never too crowded. Make sure to check the front of the store first, because thats where the newest items are. Old + New Bape. Visvim, Undercover Raf
Housing Works Upper East Side 1222 2nd Ave This shop is filled with rich white people shit. Housing works can be kinda pricy, but sometimes they have good steals. Occasionally they have trendier stuff too. Check the jeans and polo racks, they've the places Ive found the best stuff. Also a goodwill on 61st and 1st so you might want to check that out. Armani, Allen Edmonds, Prada, Gucci.
Beacons Closet Williamsburg 74 Guernsey St This is the big brother of the beacons closet in Manhattan. It's a lot bigger, and slightly less expensive, but also has slightly less good stuff. Again try to get in here early before it gets too picked over. They also tend to have a really good selection of brand new items from new York brands, and skate brands. Check out the tees, jackets and shoes, and you'll probably find something worth getting. Bianca Chandon, AMI, Awoke NY, Kith.

Message me or comment if you have any questions. This is something I've spent a bunch of time doing, so id love to help!
