r/malefashionadvice on Reddit: Chinos Vs Jeans
May 30, 2019 -

As a 21 year old student my outfits tend to consist of joggers, trackies and when dressing up, jeans. However, I'm trying to incorporate chinos into my day to day style as they are comfier and have a wider variety of colours. I wanted to hear what everyone else's thoughts on chinos are, your recommended brands and whether you'd wear them instead of jeans in your day to day life.

Chinos are lighter than jeans so they will be better when it is warmer out and they are also better in a more professional environment. Jeans are great for a casual setting and can take a real beating. Popular brands for chinos are J. Crew, Banana Republic, Bonobos, Lululemon and Asket. Also heard some good things from more budget options like Goodfellow and Uniqlo. I have gotten in to more technical clothing lately from brands like Outlier and Western Rise. So you definitely have plenty of options to start looking. I find myself wearing chinos a in warmer months and to work/nice places and my jeans when it is a bit colder out.

A nice core should consist of both. A dark raw selvedge jean and a khaki (or gray) chino would give you tons of versatility. Both can be dressed up or down depending on the environment and both are easy to match. Chinos are going to go a bit further in most work environments. Where jeans are a risky pick (interviews), chinos are generally more acceptable. If you have the money to spend, some of the higher end chinos with 2 or 4 way stretch are the way to go, particularly since you seem to prefer joggers. Some good options: Bonobos Tech Chino, Woodies Performance Chino, Hill City Everyday Pant, and Ministry of Supply Momentum Chino. Outlier makes great stuff but they retired their traditional 60/30 chino and haven't announced a replacement yet. A lot of people like Lululemon's ABC pant but I'm not really a fan. Uniqlo is a good budget option.
