I feel the same about my silk duvet. It's so soft and cozy, I want to use it without a cover! But I also don't want to muck it up I bought a silk cover to go with it, and it's very nice, but I still like it better without.. Answer from 4BH11 on reddit.com

First, thank you all for your advice on my silk duvet insert.

I’m in Florida and it’s always hot and humid. I asked about duvet or comforter ideas, and this sub was incredible! I was able to purchase a great silk insert during Amazon Prime day.

As I’ve gotten older, I have made my home my happy place. My bed is very important to me. Not only because I suffer from insomnia AND menopause, so when I do sleep, I want to sleep well and as cool as possible. The first thing I do when I wake up is make my bed. I change my sheets twice a week. I love my bed. ❤️

So on Monday washed my duvet cover, and normally I’m a maniac about getting the bed put back together, but I was started getting busy with work and I didn’t do it. When it was time for bed, I just had my fitted sheet, flat sheet, and duvet (no cover).

Well holy smokes I slept better! I didn’t realize how heavy the duvet cover is. I started thinking about how on cruise ships they pretty much use two flat sheets as the duvet cover. Not gonna lie, I’m kind of tempted to do it, because my duvet cover is HOT 🥵 And it’s starting to heat up down here. Do y’all have any suggestions for a really light and possibly cooling duvet cover recommendations?

Again thank you for the silk suggestion! Great investment.

I use a LL Bean percale duvet cover over a Feathered Friends down comfort, and it is LOUD! I sleep hot and roll/move around a lot. Does anyone have suggestions for a quieter and cooler material that is not plastic or synthetic?

Research so far suggests sateen, silk, and bamboo (but I've read bamboo is mostly plastic).

Thank you!

Someone gave me a beautiful and extremely fluffy down duvet before the winter began this year and I’ve become spoiled by its pillowy, cloud-like feeling. But as the days get warmer, it’s beginning to get uncomfortably hot at night. Is it possible to find a thick and fluffy summer duvet that will stay somewhat cool? I did some light research at the mall but all the cool duvets I found were disappointingly flat. If you have any tips for me, I’d appreciate them!

I often wake up covered in sweating, despite sleeping with the window open.

With Spring/Summer around the corner, I want some new sheets that will help with breathability.

Linen. Idk if it’s inexpensive to you but it’s absolutely worth it. You can try all you want and go thru a bunch of “inexpensive” fabrics, products, and marketing claims about things being made for hot sleepers but you’ll keep buying and trying more. Linen has been the only thing that has worked for me after endless trials. Don’t be me. Just buy into the fact the linen is the most temp neutral material and accept the old adage “you get what you pay for” It honestly probably is the least expensive too because of the durability (if taken care of) and will last years. I have all linen bedding and use a lightweight linen quilt with wool filling from Casper and use it year round. I live in Minnesota so it goes from -20 to 100 degrees here. Winter has some nights that I need a knit blanket

As mielnik21 says, linen itself is the best fabric for bed sheets as far as breathability goes. It stays feeling clean and fresh too, night after night. It has a temperature regulating effect so it doesn't feel cold the way cotton sheets do, but it just doesn't get hot either. When I discovered it, I replaced all my bedding. I love it. Cotton is rated by thread count and weave, with high thread counts giving a superior cotton with a very smooth finish (depending on weave). However, a high thread count also gives a tight knit layer that holds warm air and moisture in the bed, which isn't good. Linen is much more absorbent than cotton, and it's not so tightly woven. Moisture is absorbed and warm air is allowed to circulate. Linen is rated by weight - grams per square metre (gsm) - not thread count. The weight tells you how thick the threads are. A low weight means a thinner fabric. Good linen sheets are between 165 gsm and 190 gsm. I have some that are 165-170 gsm and they are light and lovely, and I have some that are 180 gsm. They are slightly heavier but not hot. Linen can be expensive, but good linen is worth it. Cheap linen can be scratchy, and while it should soften with time and wear, it's scratchy until it does soften. At the moment Ikea has 100% linen sheets and duvet covers for an excellent price. They're probably a good place to start unless you've got lots of money to spend on bedding. Bamboo is basically rayon. It's not cool. Possibly a duvet is too warm and heavy for you at this time of year. I don't know what the average temperature is where you live but if you're waking up sweaty when the weather's not hot either your bed covers are too warm for the season, or you could have a health problem that causes night sweats. If it's just hot weather, buy linen sheets.

r/Bedding on Reddit: Duvet Insert for HOT Sleeper
June 7, 2025 -

Hey everyone.

I recently bought a new duvet cover (cotton percale) and the lightest down comforter I could find. Despite keeping the room at 64 degrees at night, I'm still hot.

What material would you guys recommend for a hot sleeper like me? Cotton insert? Something else?

If you have any specific products in mind, all I want is a king-sized insert that has loops on the corners so I can tie the insert to the drawstrings that are built into the duvet cover.

Thanks you!

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who responded. I appreciate all the good suggestions. I ended up buying the Your Moon wool blanket. Checked all the boxes of what I was looking for: All natural materials, corner loops, lightweight will still having some heft, and very reasonably priced.

Used it last night for the for the first time and couldn't have been happoer. It was perfect.

Definitely recommend it for other hot sleepers.

I’m very sensitive to temperature and weight changes of duvet (probably some big sensory issue linked to something undiagnosed!) and I’ve invested in really nice fitted sheets and a Tencell top sheet to help on hotter nights. My next thing would be to start looking at duvets. I’m not sure whether I’m meant to be looking more at the material of the duvet cover, the duvet filling itself or both. So far, I’ve been looking at the usual: Wool - https://www.dunelm.com/product/fogarty-unbleached-wool-duvet-1000193884?defaultSkuId=30739641

I’m getting a duvet for Christmas and I’m struggling with finding the best one for not a billion dollars. I want one that’s down, but cooling, and with a good medium weight to it. What’s a good brand that will last a good while and won’t break the bank?

I have the duvet cover and I have the sheets, both high thread count real cotton that I spent a pretty penny on, but 4 years with them and I never want another set of bedding. I live in a hot climate, so I sleep with just my top sheet and duvet cover, no duvet insert. I love my bedding set up, I think it looks classy and fancy, it's soft to the touch but not fluffy so I'm not too hot when I sleep, and in winter I add a small fleece blanket as needed.

However, my girlfriend is planning to move in and she wants fluffy comforter style bedding. I have previously purchased 3 duvet inserts in the last ~6 years that were all "cooling" but I was always too hot in them and got rid of them. Prior to that I had a handful of comforters while growing up, but I lived in a cold climate back then.

If I purchase another duvet insert, I want it to be the last one I ever buy, so it needs to be of quality, but it also needs to basically not keep ANY heat, it's function is just to be fluffy. Most things of quality are also, reasonably, made to be warm, but I need the opposite.
