I'm gonna splurge on a bottle of some nice cognac for my birthday month. Which do you think I should get? They're $69 CAD and $74 CAD respectively at the shop. Cheers!

For VS I go Courvoisier. Both are a bit tough to drink neat so I usually go for the cheaper stuff. But vsop or xo I'd go with Hennessey of the two brands.(personal opinion)

I am going to duty free in a few days, and these two are in my option along with Hennessy Black which I heard is less complex, they don't have other brands, and XO cost 3-4times the price which is out of reach, which bottle to go for? I normally drink Single Malt Scotch. I am looking for something nice and complex.

If you're going to duty free that's the perfect time to buy XO given its price difference to regular stores. But if that's out of reach you ought to have a good choice at the airport, I can't comment on the choices you list but if I can throw another in, keep an eye out for Baron Otard VSOP, at that level it's my favourite (so far!)

I havent had either in a while but I remember liking Couvoisier much more than Hennessy. Also Hennessy black is my least favorite of the three you listed, by far.

Not bad, but VS is basically the least aged cognac. It goes VS then VSOP then XO. I would recommend starting with a VSOP, but that’s just me. :)

I wouldn't pay $40 for a VS cognac from any of the Big Four. I don't know how draconian your local liquor control laws are, but in more liberal jurisdictions $40 will land you a VSOP, or better.
