Review: Dark Universe at Epic Universe - Coaster101
August 30, 2025 - The land is exactly what it needs to be, and feels expansive and exciting despite being the smallest land at the park. Here is my review of the land as a whole, the food and the sttractions.

Universal’s Dark Universe: A Monster Lover's Review - Horror Press
June 18, 2025 - The show, which was scrapped in 2016 to make way for the Fast & Furious: Supercharged ride, featured classic Universal Monsters getting a rock-and-roll makeover and performing live (or, in Dracula’s case, undead) on stage. I was obsessed with the Revue, returning relentlessly even after my family refused to join. So I can say with complete confidence that Dark Universe at Universal Epic Universe will make every monster kid who visits very happy.

April 8, 2025 - They definitely have the talent to make a non intense practical dark ride on the same level of Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean to serve as an anchor attraction for a “people eater” land. Their animatronics rival Tokyo Disney · I don’t think the issue with Epic is it not being child friendly enough so much as it not having enough less intense rides/shows that seniors and adults who can’t handle intense rides can do.

Universal Epic Universe Review: A Spectacular Achievement with Room For Improvement
May 5, 2025 - To me, Yoshi’s Adventure would be in last place in terms of overall ride rankings, but I will probably end up having some stronger words for an attraction in Dark Universe in just a little bit, so there’s a teaser to continue to push past the 4,500 words we’re already at in this review. The final attraction in Super Nintendo World is Mine-Cart Madness, located in the Donkey Kong Country section within the land. Again, this is exclusive to Epic Universe when it comes to domestic Super Nintendo World implementations, but it should be similar to the version that is available in Universal Studios Japan.

March 2, 2025 - Dark universe was my favorite land of the day, and has an amazing atmosphere, I’m certain this will be the fan favorite of the park. ... The only characters I saw throughout the day in the land were The invisible man in his Wrapped up attire, Ygor, and 2 seperate Violinists. ... So far the only negative I've heard about Epic is that Darkmoor is too small.

Universal's Epic Universe
Prior to my Epic Universe trip, Dark Universe was the land I felt the least attached to – the classic Universal Monsters just haven’t been a part of my life the way Mario and How to Train Your Dragon have. Filled with magic, monsters, dragons, stars, and plumbers, Epic Universe lives up to its name and then some. While it isn’t without a few stumbles and forgettable rides, the immersion and moments that take your breath away and transport you far away from Orlando and into the stories we hold closest to our hearts are unmatched. It’s hard to fully convey what Universal has done here in bringin

r/UniversalMonsters on Reddit: Dark Universe at Epic Universe: What’s Canon?
March 15, 2025 -

Epic Universe and Dark Universe are opening soon but there’s lots of pictures and videos online already. I know the land takes place in its own universe separate from the movies, but I thought it would be fun to speculate what from the movies might be canon to the land.

I believe some version of the events of Frankenstein happened in Dark Universe. You can see Maria’s grave as you walk into the land, you see Henry Frankenstein’s portrait in the queue for the ride (with Colin Clive’s likeness), and the dead body of the original Monster with Boris Karloff’s likeness can also be seen in the queue.

I do not believe the events of Bride are canon, as she is still alive in the land, but we do know that Dr. Pretorius existed as there is a shop with his portrait and coffin in it, so there is that nod at least. There is a character named Igor in the land who is Victoria Frankenstein’s assistant, but he’s not Ygor from Son of Frankenstein. He’s the typical Fritz-Ygor amalgamation you see all the time in popular culture. I think it’s pretty safe to say the Frankenstein sequels aren’t canon but we do have the Bride and Pretorius.

I think it’s very possible that the events of Dracula are also canon. Dracula’s immortal so it wouldn’t have any conflicts with the timeline. Sure, he dies at the end, but that was never a problem for him in the movies. He also doesn’t resemble Bela Lugosi, but he’s resembled Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine so that isn’t a dealbreaker either.

The events of The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, and The Phantom of the Opera are also probably canon, but the dates have been floated to later in the timeline, when the land takes place. Though not Universal, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde also exist concurrently.

It is possible that some version of Creature from the Black Lagoon also happened, as the head of the classic Gillman can be seen hanging in the Burning Blade Tavern, confirming that there is more than one. The Mummy is immortal so some version of the events of the films could’ve also happened.

Some other Universal horror films are referenced in the land as well. The dead body of a Mole Person can be seen in a cage, and John Carpenter’s The Thing can be seen frozen in ice in the Burning Blade, half transformed into an alien from This Island Earth. It might be a stretch to say some kind of version of the events of those films actually happened, but it’s cool to know that the creatures are out there in the Dark Universe!

An American Werewolf in London 100% isn’t canon, but I can’t not mention David’s red jacket in the queue for the werewolf ride. Just a really nice touch bringing together two of Universal’s best werewolf movies.

And that’s all I got! This is the most exciting time for us monster fans in a long time. This land looks amazing and I can’t wait to go myself someday, and I hope it inspires some new movies!

May 22, 2025 - I was looking forward to this land more than anything else in Epic Universe, or even the upcoming additions to Walt Disney World–Tropical Americas, Monstropolis, etc. One reason I loved the idea of (re-)animating Dark Universe as a land in Epic Universe was because I was fully on-board for Universal’s Dark Universe cinematic universe back in 2017.

Reading about all the misery of the last few days, I hesitate to post my review, but anyway... I am Dutch (so from The Netherlands) and planned a trip to Orlando with my youngest son, in October last year. I wanted to go before the summer for several reasons, so decided on April 22 to 30, with a split stay at Cabana and Carribean Beach. I knew Epic would not yet be open, but we'd have fun anyway. We have done a lot of European parks and this was a bucket list trip. A week before our flights we found out that Universal hotel guests would be eligible for Epic tickets, so had our fingers crossed on our entire itinerary... On April 23 we were at the vacation desk of Cabana at 7.00 AM and got our, very unexpected, tickets to Epic. Praise be! As I said we have seen a lot of themeparks and some very pretty ones (Phantasialand, Europa park, Efteling, Port Aventura, etc.), but Epic is something else. The tech alone is awesome and the quality of everything you walk, touch, hear and feel is fantastic. We rode Stardust Racers and, not being the greatest Mack fan, have to admit they made a masterpiece here. In the evening we did 5 more rides (sorry people) and finished with a frontrow in the dark on green. Absolutely awesome and rivals Velocicoaster. Monsters Unchained had a delay when we entered the queue, but that was sorted out in minutes, which meant that we rode it 15 minutes later. Every animatronic seemed to work and this is the coolest darkride I have ridden. Elite tech and a wild experience. I am not the biggest fan of Dark Universe during the day, but at night it has the right atmosphere. Curse of the Werewolf is OK, but very tame for a Mack spinner. SNW was up next and we did Bowser first, which I found pretty funny and after this we waited 35 minutes to ride Mine Kart Madness, which I found underwhelming, but at least something new and cool. Mind your knees on that one. Berk was great and Hiccups a very fun and surprising ride. We really enjoyed that one and think it's indeed a short, but sweet, version of Hagrids. We did not do the other rides there, but the atmosphere in Berk is great and fun. The last portal for us was Wizarding Paris. This impressed me the most. I have been in Paris and other big European cities a lot and it's mind-blowing to see what they build there. The level of detail, the scale, even the murals are what you would expect in a 19th century version of Paris. A few more sidewalk café's there and it's perfect. In the meantime we got a VQ for MoM at 6 pm and stepped into the Metrofloo to another amazement. The scale of that atrium is awesome! We waited about an hour in line for the ride and had an almost perfectly executed show, fail one animatronic at the end. Very impressive, and had me wondering at one point why there was an actor in there.... Although it's a lot of screens it's very well done. We had dinner at Meteor Astropub, which was quick and pretty OK, but we did not check out a lot of food. All in all had a fantastic day and did all of the major rides. At night it looks stunning and I think they should open it to at least 10pm. I see the problem people are having with lack of shade. On April 23 we had pretty low crowds, so we could find shade under some parasols, but with high attendance this will be a problem and we might see unruly folks jump the fountains... On the whole I think this is a fantastic park. I love the design, the technology, the lay out and the three elite rides (Stardust, Monsters and MoM). The facial recognition on the lockers is great, there are lots of freestyle machines and good restaurants. There is a lot of stuff you can do, so I do not agree with ppl calling it too empty with rides. Having said that, it's not perfect. It could use a proper water ride (Mario's Odyssey?), Darkmoor could use something like a maze or walkthrough and Wizarding Paris could maybe use more seating. We are grateful for the day we had and hope they iron out the problems. Universal is setting new standards and I hope they will be very successful. And in the meantime, we will follow the UK plans with interest.

Comprehensive Review for 5/7: Anyone who went on 5/7 will be aware of how serious the issues with the park were on this day. I’ve never overheard so many unhappy people in a theme park, genuinely seems like the majority of guests had a negative experience overall. Pros: Restrooms: The restrooms were all clean, adequately sized, and most importantly, well themed. It seems like every restroom in the park is uniquely stylized, they are genuinely almost all worth seeing. Presentation (Especially At Night): One thing everyone can agree on is how stellar the park looks, the animatronic budget for Berk alone must’ve been insane, the audio is crisp everywhere, and the lighting shines in a way I’ve never seen in a theme park before. Restaurants: The set up of the restaurants in Epic is better than any theme park I have seen, most guests will only dine at the many quick service locations and they got the food out incredibly fast at all 3 we visited, the theming for these quick service places is on par with what I would expect in the table service restaurants too. Food was mostly great and only a bit overpriced imo. Cons: Lack of Shade and Fans: This is a Florida theme park and it will be hot 80-90% of the year, the lack of shade in this park will legitimately get someone hurt and might actually be the worst problem it has. Extended queues for rides had no fans either, which was most egregious in Isle of Berk, but also an issue for Dark Universe. Having to wait 30+ minutes under the hot sun with zero reprieve completely sapped my group’s energy multiple times. Sun protection is a must if you’re going to this park anytime soon. Operations: This is a separate issue from delays, the operations were subpar on the rides that were open. Hiccup’s Wing Gliders only had half the station working, so only one train was going at a time, so it had super limited capacity, one side of dragon racer rally was down as well. Only Monsters and Mario Kart operated single rider queues, Curse of The Werewolf briefly did but it closed. Werewolf also had pretty slow dispatches for a major theme park (about 2 minutes to get each train out because they were double checking every restraint). Delays: 3 rides were down for the entire day, Minecart Madness, Stardust Racers, and Fyre Drill (which opened for about 10 minutes at 8:00 before getting shut due to weather). Ministry only opened for around 2 hours, and my party’s return time for 6:00 was turned into an express pass which we were just barely able to use at the end of the night before rides shut for weather delays. Most of the other attractions were down for a couple hours throughout the day as well, and some shows were canceled. Delays happen, but it is clear that the park is not ready for a grand opening, there are not going to be considerable improvements in the next 2 weeks, and the park probably should’ve been in a soft open testing phase for much longer than it was. Extra Notes: The two shows at Epic are the best theme park shows I have ever seen, they feel truly innovative and the scale of both will astound you if you haven’t seen spoilers, imo Cirque Arcanus was the best attraction I experienced at Epic, I’m surprised there hasn’t been more discussion about it. Celestial Park is my favorite hub area of any theme park. The fountains look excellent during the day, and at night the lighting makes it look like an upscale carnival in the best way. The colored beacons from each portal shooting into the sky are pretty amazing to see in person. Still needs way more coverings/misters. Monsters is a bit overhyped, the animatronics are unbelievable and the queue is among the best I’ve seen but the ride’s pacing is a bit off, I thought it would’ve been much cooler to see teasers of each monster throughout the ride and then get attacked by all at once in a big finale. There are still many places where the backstage is visible and there are a couple times where you can see the ride vehicle in front of you going through the next scene. Still probably one of the better rides, on the same level as Forbidden Journey but it doesn’t surpass it. Should You Go: This is probably one of the best times to go and just see the park without massive crowds. If you’re willing to pay full price to see it early then go ahead. But I would genuinely skip riding any attractions until 5-6 due to the possible delays and just focus on exploring the details of the park during the day. My years of hype for the park kind of ended in disappointment and I have no real interest in going back for quite a while despite how good some of the park is, it just isn’t ready, and there will be a massive backlash come the 22nd. But when it works this will be an IOA level park, it’ll probably take a few years though.
