Pilgrim Priest | Prayer: Consolation and Desolation
November 21, 2015 - Ignatius calls this Consolation. At other times, we cannot feel God's love. Even though we know God loves us, we feel, "darkness of soul, disturbance in it, movement to low and earthly things, disquiet from various agitations and temptations, moving to lack of confidence, without hope, without love, finding oneself totally slothful, tepid, sad, and as if separated from one's Creator and Lord." (#317) This is Desolation, and it sucks.

June 30, 2010 - Consolation is the interior movement of the heart that gives a deep sense of life-giving connection with God, others and my most authentic self in God. It is the sense that all is right with the world, that I am free to be given over to God ...

r/AskAPriest on Reddit: How often can we go from consolation to desolation or vice versa?
June 25, 2022 -

This is something I've always wondered about St. Ignatius' rules of discernment. How long does a period of consolation or desolation have to last? Can it be as short as a day or an afternoon, or would that be considered just a 'bad day' and not necessarily the spiritual consolation/desolation that Ignatius describes?

Consolation and Desolation: an Ignatian Exercise — Space to Breathe
May 13, 2020 - Commentator Margaret Silf explains that the two words help us judge which direction our life is taking us in —toward hope, to the light [consolation] or away from hope or light [desolation]? Both these experiences are common to us but have very different results. On a piece of paper draw a line down the middle and then write ‘consolation’ on one side and ‘desolation’ on the other.

Discern the Call: Consolation and Desolation
As Ignatius meditated on what he read, he experienced consolation and he remained "cheerful and satisfied." As he meditated on the dreams of worldly glory that he previously enchanted him, he experienced desolation and felt "weary, dry and dissatisfied." As he pondered these two different movements of consolation and desolation, he discovered his personal vocation.

Jesuit 101: Consolation and Desolation - The Jesuit Post
April 1, 2022 - As you can see above, consolation (and desolation, as we’ll see) is more than just a feeling or feelings. Rather, it is a state of being. This means that we shouldn’t expect any particular feeling whether we’re in consolation. Rather, it is a lens through which we are looking at the world—the lens of God’s love.

From Desolation to Consolation - The Desolation of Feeling Stuck
I told the person behind me to take my place, I’d follow next. But when that time came, I was still immobile. I let several others go before me that day, and I sat there, paralyzed by the fear that my confession wouldn’t be good enough for God to forgive me. That’s how the desolation of stuckness works.

Consolation & Desolation – God In All Things
December 22, 2020 - When we understand this, we can say that consolation is when we feel our life fully connected with the context of the Principle and Foundation, when all seems oriented toward our purpose of loving God and neighbour. Desolation, on the other hand, is an unawareness or uncertainty of how our life fits within the context of the Principle and Foundation.
