Injured list - BR Bullpen
That same winter, MLB announced plans to rename the list, until then called the disabled list, as the "injured list", reflecting the fact that players on it were not disabled, but simply injured. This was done at the urging of groups advocating for the truly disabled, as it helped to perpetuate misconceptions about disabled persons' ability to participate fully in society. Mary A. r/baseball on Reddit: Why do people have a problem with calling it the IL rather than the DL?
February 9, 2019 -

So I just came from an r/redsox thread where someone said that they changed it to IL “because people are too soft”. I’ll be honest, I’m still calling it the DL usually because I’m just not used to the name change yet and have forgotten about it at times, but I’m personally glad that they changed it.

I’m not glad because I’m soft. I just have never liked the name DL, not because it’s offensive or something but instead because it’s just wrong. Disabilities and injuries are 2 very different things, and why should we call it the “disabled list” when the players are not actually disabled. If the only reason people want to keep it is tradition, then go ahead and keep calling it the DL, but it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Baseball is a ridiculously traditional sport. Which is good at times, since the ability to draw basically a direct line from Babe Ruth to Joe DiMaggio to Mickey Mantle to Thurman Munson to Don Mattingly to Derek Jeter to Aaron Judge is part of the appeal to me. The flip side to the tradition is that it can be very resistant to change, or basically anything that isn't "the way it's been done." See: the shift, openers, designated hitters, soaking, bat flipping, pitch clocks, rules about stepping out of the batter's box, etc. I'm not saying that all of those changes are necessarily good or not because your mileage will vary, but there are people who will complain about change because its a change, not necessarily on the merits of the proposal. A disability rights nonprofit approached MLB to change the name from "Disabled" because for them, there was a certain disparaging connotation to "disabled list". Is the term technically correct? Yeah, sure. One one of the definitions for disabled includes something like "limits activities" or whatever. Does "injured list" accomplish exactly the same thing without the same possibility for disparagement? Yeah. I don't want to say it doesn't matter, because for some people [namely the advocates] it does matter, but for baseball purposes, the name is meaningless. It could be the disabled list, the injured list, injured reserve, the Player-Unable-to-Perform List, or the "Troy Tulowitzki Memorial Sit-down-time List". Changing it affects baseball fans about as much as it would affect whether or not a home stadium is called "park", "field", or "stadium". But you'll always get people who don't like change, so whatever.

DL just sounds better to say than IL. Though, if it was originally IL I’d probably be saying the exact opposite. Basically change is disliked.

r/mlb on Reddit: ELI5: How do the injured lists work? How can this player be on the IL10 when he's out until August (seems optimistic) with a broken shoulder?
May 26, 2024 - Injured List used to be called the Disabled List. Disability advocates wanted this change because the term 'disabled' is inaccurate in this case as the players on the list don't have a disability, they are temporarily injured.
