It sounds like you downloaded the Ultimate version instead of the Community version. On the intelliJ download page you need to scroll down to the Community edition link, the one at the top of the page is the ultimate edition. More on reddit.com

i used to use community edition on Java projects and was very happy with it. here's what I like about ultimate: better when working with other languages - e.g. TypeScript it understands as well as WebStorm DB integration is very slick, I can get autocompletion in my SQL strings if you're Java or Kotlin only I think CE is fine.
