SW is used by contractors, it is good stuff. I’m sure there’s better as well They have an enamel product in the Emerald line that is recommended for cabinets, so it is not just regular wall paint. Very possible they are using this. I used it for a pantry cabinet and am very happy with the result, seems durable although I’ve only used it for 6 months so far. Might want to wait two weeks for paint to cure on shelves before placing objects on it (if painting any shelves) https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/products/emerald-urethane-trim-enamel The professional finish would also come from their equipment to spray the paint on, assuming that’s how they’d do it if you’re paying for it Answer from onredditfortheplants on reddit.com

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Professional cabinet painter says they use SW Emerald to paint, aren’t there better products out there for cabinets?
January 6, 2023 -

Other painters have mentioned using factory finish paints that are similar to something like a car paint. I’m as surprised to hear SW Emerald as I figured that is on the lower end and a professional painter would be using something more durable.

Should we go with the SW Emerald or find a painter that uses something stronger?

I have used Emerald Trim for some of my own cabinets and am reasonsbly happy with it. I would second that 2 day cure time prior to handling and installation. I would give it a minimum of two weeks before aggressive cleaning just to be safe. I have also used proclassic latex and find the Emerald to be a little tougher at least short term. I have Proclassic doing well at 10 yr plus. You mentioned Pro Industrial urethane alkyd waterborne.

r/paint on Reddit: how bad is SW Emerald Urethane for cabinets?
March 25, 2025 -

honestly, how bad is SW Emerald Urethane for cabinets? 1 coat of primer, 2 coats of Emerald Urethane. yes, I know there's a lot of hate for Emerald Urethane for cabinets, it's not meant for cabinets. yes, I know there are a lot of better options. but how bad is it really? what can I expect to go wrong with Emerald Urethane?

What if cure time doesn't matter? Cure time shouldn't be an issue for me, cabinets won't be used until fully cure anyways (~30days)

Lastly, please don't recommend other brand lines/brands to me. I'm just an avg consumer, not painting myself, just getting feedback from contractors I'm interviewing

How to Paint Cabinets: Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel Review | Dans le Lakehouse
April 1, 2021 - I let the cabinets cure for a few days on the counter and then installed them. I babied the cabinets the first week, careful not to scrape or scrub the paint. I never noticed any issues with the paint, but I have learned that paint, in general, really takes up to a month to actually actually cure. Today, the finish is rock solid. It’s been a few months since I first painted the cabinets with Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

How To Paint Your Cabinets Like The Pros With Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel - farmhouseish
January 29, 2021 - For the cabinet frame, I just used my brush and roller to apply my paint. This paint went on SO smoothly, even with my brush and roller. I needed 2 total coats for my boxes. I would brush on the paint, then lay it off with my roller to minimize brush strokes. And the finish I got with the Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is perfection.

I also ruled out traditional latex paint (regular old wall paint) because it’s really not meant for cabinetry and tends to ding easily. Then I began looking at alkyd enamel paints. I settled on Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. It has a lot of the same great qualities as an oil-based paint.
