From PEP 8, in the “Programming Recommendations” section:
For sequences, (strings, lists, tuples), use the fact that empty sequences are false.
So you should use:
if not some_string:
or:
if some_string:
Just to clarify, sequences are evaluated to False or True in a Boolean context if they are empty or not. They are not equal to False or True.

Well first of all, " " isn't an empty string, it's a string containing a single space. The empty string is "". But "" is only equivalent to None in a boolean context, because they are both falsy. That is, if you do: if my_var: and my_var is either of those (or 0, or an empty list, dict, etc) then it will be False. But otherwise these are completely different.
