Wife's HR dept said they'd been contacted by Equifax with "an employment and wage verification request" and are asking if it's legitimate. She hasn't authorized anything like this or had any dealings with equifax. What is this?
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2017/09/equifax-isnt-calling FTC says it's a scam. Does your wife work at a company with a public phone directory or is her place of employment searchable on the internet (ie LinkedIn, Facebook, corporate Facebook, etc)? I'd view it as a social engineering attempt. Don't tell them anything. And don't help Equifax out unless it's to dispute your credit report, either. Just on principle. They selling your account data (demographics, credit history, salary history) for profit so you can receive junk mail. It's not a mutually beneficial arrangement. More on reddit.com

“The work number” by equifax is a database that stores employment history. Make sure you check yours!!
There’s a right to correction. If it’s inaccurate there should be a way to get it fixed or they’d be violating laws and best practices doing so More on reddit.com

YSK that Equifax operates The Work Number, a database that tracks your entire job history—including teen jobs like retail or fast food—and shares personal details like paychecks with employers, background check companies, and debt collectors without your consent.
The Work Number is also used by your county’s department of social services to verify your gross paycheck, to verify if you meet the income limits to obtain services like SNAP, Medicaid, or TANF. More on reddit.com

Does The Work Number verify employment?

Yes - it provides instant verification of employment (VOE) and income (VOI) by pulling directly from payroll data contributed by nearly 5 million employers. OK so I called Equifax. This was their explanation: they don't collect/request any information themselves, they have that data reported to them from outside sources, which they then aggregate. So, it wasn't Equifax. It was a scammer. You can call and ask yourself, just press "4" for "other questions" - they're pretty quick at answering their phone. FWIW it's probably not identity theft yet. It's probably a low-hanging fruit lazy start to someone attempting to social engineer your wife's (or your wife's company's) information. Have your wife's HR report the call to whoever your wife's company's security team is. Hopefully they have one. Additionally, this is the kind of thing that's reportable to the FTC (1-877-FTC-HELP). They probably won't open a case on your individual complaint, but it helps them (and everyone) to keep abreast of trends so that they can produce intelligence on what the "of the moment" scams are. Now is a good time to start digging into your digital presence and how much of you and your wife's PII is openly shared online, and decide if you're comfortable with that. Don't be a soft target if you're concerned about ID theft. You don't need to have the most secure house on the block, you just need to be more secure than your neighbors. Very little "social" information is actually benign. Most of it can be engineered to be used against you.
