Question about running cat6 and installing wall plates.
You would use an Ethernet switch to support connecting multiple devices. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Switch-Unmanaged-TL-SG108/dp/B00A121WN6/ But note that you shouldn't connect any devices directly to a modem, without first connecting a router. One port of your switch would connect to a LAN port on your router, then use the other ports on the switch to patch to your room drops. A router isn't just for wifi - in fact wifi is a secondary function of a wireless router. You want a router even for wired connections. However the device you're calling a "modem" may in fact be a modem/router combo. If you'd like help confirming that, give its exact brand and model. Also, if you're running cables inside walls, you want to terminate it to *jacks* in wallplates, NOT to plugs. Like these: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Listed-10-Pack-Keystone/dp/B00IO3HEN6/ You would then use factory made patch cables of suitable lengths to connect to the switch. Obviously in the rooms you would also use a cable of suitable length. At both ends. At the location where you plan to put your switch, you can either use patch panel ... https://www.amazon.com/Yankok-Supports-Unshielded-Network-Termination/dp/B095WX71BG/ ... or if its only 6 cables, you could get away with a 6 port wallplate like this: https://www.amazon.com/Morris-88170-DataComm-Keystone-Modular/dp/B005GDFJPW/ This is the type of tool you'd use to terminate the cable to those jacks: https://www.amazon.com/Eclipse-Tools-902-341-Impact-Punch/dp/B00L1FPXGY/ Here is a link to some decent quality patch cables, offered in a variety of lengths. It doesn't hurt to have spare cables around in a closet or drawer. https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-10-Pack-Snagless-Ethernet/dp/B00K2E4QZE/ More on reddit.com

Cat 6 wall plate
I agree that it's better to do punchdown keystones - putting a plug on the end, only to plug into a jack that has another jack makes no sense to me. It's just another connection to possibly fail someday. If nothing else, crimpers are a lot more expensive than punchdowns, and punchdowns are simpler to me. Either standard is fine, but if you have one in use, go with that one for consistency. See here, if you're interested: T568A or T568B More on reddit.com

What Ethernet Wall Plate Do I need to terminate cat6 cables?
Wall plates that accept CAT cables directly are not common anymore. Those are not IDC compliant anyway. the common way now is to buy a wall plate with a keystone holder, and get a keystone punchdown jack You need both of these https://www.amazon.com/Cmple-Hole-Keystone-Plate-White/dp/B003ZZUZ6Q https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Listed-10-Pack-Keystone/dp/B00IO3HEN6 More on reddit.com

r/HomeNetworking on Reddit: Question about running cat6 and installing wall plates.
March 11, 2024 -

Just moved and saw every room has phone jacks outlets in the wall. I originally thought they were Ethernet ports but realized they were not.

I would like to change out the phone ports for Ethernet.

Aside from all the crimping and work that needs to be done on the outlet / wall plate side, do you just run the wires down into the modem? What do I connect to? I can’t imagine they go directly to the modem because you would run out ports rather quick. I got like 6 rooms to set up and my modem doesn’t even have that many ports.

Can someone school me on where I need to connect each wire to and if I need addition equipment (which I imagine I do and what that equipment exactly does)

Thanks!

You need a switch. 8 port should suffice. A patch cable goes from the switch to the router, leaving 7 ports for the Ethernet runs from the rooms. Do not crimp male ends onto the ethernet cables, get a patch panel and terminate them with keystone jacks and then use patch cables from the patch panel to the switch.
