Not an author, but I run my BFF's FB ads (I'm a product marketing manager in a different field). Here's what I've learned: It's really difficult to make a profit on single-book FB ads. The trick is to advertise a series, with the next book in the series linked to your advertised book's backmatter. The read-through is where the profit kicks in, with Book 1 generally acting as a loss leader. There are various spreadsheets out there that help you calculate your read-through $$ with and without Kindle Unlimited. Test, test, test your ads with different combinations of text, images, and videos. Keep iterating at a low budget until you find a winner. Don't scale up your daily FB ads budget until you have an ad that has at least a 6% Click-Through Rate (the higher the better, of course... I don't scale until my CTR is at least 10%) and a Cost per Click (CPC) of less than $0.18 (for a series... it needs to be much lower than that for a single book). ETA: My BFF sells her ebooks for $5.99/$6.99 each, so the 70% royalty rate is the cost basis I'm using. If you're selling your book for more or less than that, then your target CPC is going to vary pretty widely. I personally found the book "Help! My Facebook Ads Suck" extremely helpful, since it's targeted at indie authors. The authors also offer a free readthrough calculator spreadsheet on their website. Depends on your goals, competitiveness of niche, type of product, etc. You can start with $30 and based on the results you get, you can increase that amount. However, I think you need to spend a good amount of money on ads, especially if you are new and if you have a huge competition. You need to pay at least 2 or 3 months for ads to see some results. For example, I spent $10 every day for three weeks on them and I wasn't quite satisfied. They are expensive and I had much better results by using services such as Marketing Heaven.
