FiiO M23 Review - Headfonia
May 23, 2024 - the FiiO M17, a flagship packing a dual ES9038Pro DAC, 5 different kinds of outputs, and desktop-class amplification · and now the FiiO M23, the spiritual heir of the M11, introducing a whole new naming and bringing back the famous AKM chips in their DAP’s range

Of course, I'm aware that the higher-end M17 is already armed with a ton of outputs, a larger battery, and more, but for most enthusiasts, the M23 is more than enough to get you started on the road to end-game DAP.

June 21, 2024 - The FiiO M23 exhibits impressive speed, surpassing even the M15S, while also possessing the same level of energy and liveliness as the M17. However, it distinguishes itself by offering a smoother and more polite sound signature.

FiiO M23 review: one potent portable player | Stuff
May 10, 2024 - Detail and frequency separation are both superb, and only really bettered by players costing multiple times the M23’s asking price – but even then not by multiple magnitudes. The flow between different parts of the frequency range is delicate, giving a 24-bit FLAC version of Muse’s Madness incredible airiness. The M17 is still FiiO’s flagship DAP for a reason, but the M23 barely puts a foot wrong on this front.

Tonally, the M15s plays even closer to its big brother M17 than the M23 does. With its AKM DACs, the latter sounds a little smoother, but thinner in the mid-range with a slightly purer bass range.

r/FiiO on Reddit: Recommendations
January 15, 2024 -

Hey guys,

I am writing to request recommendations on which DAC player to use for listening to high-quality music.

I recently received the AirPods Max as a gift, and I have been watching some videos that review the Fiio M17, for example, and I would like to know if it is advisable to buy a device similar to that one. I am considering buying the 3.5mm audio adapter for the AirPods Max and subscribing to a service like Tidal to have access to better quality music streaming.

That being said, what other devices do you recommend, such as a DAC, to get the most out of the headphones? Is the Fiio M17 worth it? Or is it meant for more sophisticated headphones? Are there similar options in the market? Am I doing the right thing by using the 3.5mm jack? Is Tidal sufficient?

I greatly appreciate your recommendations.

You will get absolutely zero benefit from a DAP using AirPod Max. You would need to get a legitimate wired IEM or headphone that does not have a built in DSP which virtually all ANC headphones have. The only correct way to use any AirPods are on Apple devices because you will be locked out of many features on an Android based DAP. Additionally, AirPods are not really an audio first headphone they are a feature first headphone purpose built for commuting. They are a great gift but you don’t need any other gear besides a modern day Apple device to enjoy them. Also none of the AirPods whether it be the earbuds or the headphones support lossless audio not even through a wired connection because of the DSP so you do not need to get a Tidal subscription or a DAP because again there would be zero benefit. You’re better off sticking to Amazon Music HD or Apple Music for the larger Dolby Atmos libraries which the AirPods specialize in. If you are serious about audio quality, which it looks like you are, the AirPods Max are not the headphone for that if anything they would be a complimentary commuting headphone for when you are not taking music listening seriously and just want to silence the world around you. If you want legitimate good sounding audio first headphones with a DAP I would consider the Fiio M23 not the M17 and a pair of IEMs like the Hidiz MP145, Kiwi Ears Quintet, or Thieaudio Hype 4 for portability and/or a Hifiman Edition XS or Hifiman Ananda SE for use at home because those are open back headphones.

AirPods MAX and a digital audio player is a little like oil in water. On their own as a Bluetooth headset, or in the iOS space, nothing wrong there. But the situation with using these headphones when wired is messy. You have to use a 3.5mm (connected to single ended audio source, presumably) cable to lightning (connected to AirPods MAX). An analog source, undergoes analog to digital conversion by the cable, then goes through the headset's own digital to analog conversion for making sound at your ears. In this environment, an M17 is complete overkill. You're taking a beast of a DAP with its own assortment of audio circuitry (dual ES9038PRO dac chips and THX amps), then bottlenecking it with another step of analog to digital conversion, and then another step of digital to analog conversion. A total waste, honestly.

FiiO M23 review - AKM for the win - Hifizone.pl
September 23, 2024 - Number one is that the M23 is at the moment exactly in the middle of the FiiO’s DAP’s lineup – we have the M11S and the M11 Plus from the bottom, both based on the ESS silicon. And then we have more expensive M15S and the M17, both sporting the ESS Technology conversion chips.

r/mobileaudiophile on Reddit: Just ordered the Fiio M17, so obviously now is the time to seek purchase advice, as is tradition
July 6, 2024 -

I wanted an Android DAP, but I've been hesitant because my current set-up (AK 1120ii) is just fine.

I wanted Android for streaming, using AutoEQ, and pairing with my TWS buds (the AK1120ii is old tech).

Use case is public transport travel with IEMs, and at the office with classic flathead wired earbuds. I don't use streaming right now, but have done and might want to try Tidal with the M17, but not if continuous Wifi is required.

The M17 is probably overkill for my needs, but I liked that it was marketed between portable and desktop, which is my use case.

Anyone have experience with it?
