r/Plumbing on Reddit: Running a natural gas line to an outdoor fire table
May 7, 2022 -

We are going to have a gas line run to our outdoor fire table which will sit on top of concrete that is yet to be poured. Was wondering if there’s a way for to me to put conduit in as the concrete will happen before a plumber is able to actually run the gas line. If so what kind of kind of conduit will work? If not possible, I will just run the line myself at least under the concrete and have the plumber hook it up when he gets time. What kind of line can I run underground and can it be same type of line run in my house or do I need to change the line type once it gets indoors?

April 11, 2022 - When running a gas line, the longer the length the fewer BTUs you will have. Your plumber must install the size of pipe you will need to match the BTUs needed for your burner. Also, when adding fittings and elbows, your BTUs are reduced even more.

I wouldn't recommend laying your own gas line under concrete. If it leaks you no longer have gas or have to rip up concrete a As far as conduit goes, I haven't really seen anything that works to well. But I would say 3 inch abs or PVC with directional fittings, do not use 90s. If it terminates to an open pit with room to work it should work, if it terminates in the concrete you might be SOL. The high density polyethylene (yellow underground HDPE) is not super flexible that's why I recommend such a large diameter pipe. Also double check your pipe sizing for the gas line. You would need to know exactly what fire fixture you want as well as total distance from gas meter and the incoming gas pressure to get the correct sizing. More on reddit.com

I’ve had a few customers call in, worried about matching their new propane fire pit to their existing gas line. In my experience, as long as you check the specs, you’ll be in good shape. If you’re not sure, our team is always happy to help you find the right fit for your outdoor fire pit or patio heater. One thing I love about these connection kits is how flexible they are. The multi-axis flex lines make installation a breeze, even in tight or awkward spaces.
