October 16, 2020Did IKEA used to make folding wood stools similar to these ones designed by Roger Tallon? I used to have a couple and was almost certain that they were from IKEA, but now I'm looking to buy another and can't find any reference to them either on the IKEA website or by Googling.

We have an old Bekväm step stool, which we've loved. We actually "inherited" from my wife's grandmother some years ago. A great, sturdy piece of furniture.
Today, we went to IKEA because we wanted to get another of these. Immediately, when lifting the package it felt very light, but I didn't think much about it.
When I started assembling it immediately felt like a very cheap. Gone were the solid tree pieces, and it was replaced by some kind of lightweight composite materiale. Overall, the new stool feels very flimsy and like something you buy to throw away, unlike the original version.
For comparison, I took some pictures and also weighed the two stools. The old one is nearly twice the weight of the new one - this adds to the quality and sturdiness of it.
I think it's a real shame that things are moving in this direction - also, I would wager that the solid, tree version is more eco-friendly as it will endure for a long, long time.

100% agree. I always keep an eye out for second-hand Ikea that’s 20+ years old as the quality was much better. I have seen them make the argument that by lightening pieces they are both using less source material and also reducing the carbon footprint of shipping. I’m sure both of those are true, but the primary reason is increased profitability by producing things more cheaply AND making items less long-lasting. Disposable furniture is not very green!

They're still solid timber in Australia. I think most of the furniture products we get here are manufactured in China. Depending on where you're located, there are probably supply issues that make it uneconomical to continue using timber. It's also possible that you get this as a cheaper option, and the solid timber version is still available at a higher price. It might be worth checking the IKEA catalogue to see if that's the only option available.
