I was looking to add some deck rail planters to my back deck this spring and put in some flowers that would be great for Hummingbirds. Normally I have feeders in that location, but I wanted to try some flowers this year.
They would need to be able to tolerate high heat, as the location would be in the direct sun pretty much all day. What would be some good flowers for these smaller planters?
I could also do 1-2 large larger potted plants on the deck, which is around 10x8.
There are plants I’ve seen them taste test, and there are plants they feast on for months. This summer I’ve seen them feed the most on Salvia ‘Amistad,’ Salvia ‘killer cranberry,’ and a couple agastache varieties (unidentified).
What plants should I add next year? I’m thinking Monarda, a big red one, like ‘Jacob Cline.’ And maybe a cuphea (firecracker plant). 🤷🏼♀️
