How can I keep my api keys on my code but not push the key to github + how to delete the history of the previous commits with the key
Just put the path of the file or folder you want git to ignore in a .gitignore file under the repository root directory. Be aware that this won’t take effect if the file you are trying to ignore is already tracked by git. To achieve this, you need to rewrite the commit history. There are tools which can help you with it like https://rtyley.github.io/bfg-repo-cleaner/ More on reddit.com

How should I handle having API keys in my app while uploading to GitHub?
There are several ways to handle this: Have a stick environment / configured file, with instructions to populate the key (note you may need to include this in the gitignore file so that each environment isn't overwritten by accidental commits). Have a set up script which needs to be run which asks questions and generates the configured/ environment file. Have your project use an environment variable to point to a configuration file / keys / certificates, and default to something sane (like the local directory) Have your key in a db (not recommended for so many reasons but still a way to do it) Don't have an API key 😋 Depending on the set up, having an external authentication microservice, though this is wholly dependent on your needs. Use some sort of 3rd party key manager More on reddit.com

Are there any libraries or SDKs available for working with GitHub APIs?
Yes, GitHub provides official libraries and SDKs in various programming languages to simplify the process of interacting with their APIs. Some popular examples include Octokit for JavaScript/TypeScript, PyGithub for Python, and go-github for Go. These libraries abstract away the low-level details of making API requests and provide convenient methods and objects to work with GitHub's data and features.

For more information, see Using secrets in GitHub Actions and Making authenticated API requests with a GitHub App in a GitHub Actions workflow. Never hardcode authentication credentials like tokens, keys, or app-related secrets into your code. Instead, consider using a secret manager such as Azure Key Vault or HashiCorp Vault.

You should not have any secrets in Git, also not in the git history (which means adding a commit to remove the secret will not be sufficient). How your users provide their API keys depends on the nature of your project. If it's a software library the API would typically be passed as an argument in the constructor. How and from where the API key is obtained is left for the consumer of your library to decide. You should never depend on some file being somewhere when building a library. If it's a command-line program API keys are typically provided as environment variables, in a config file, or as a command-line. In desktop apps it's common to have a config file and possibly provide a UI to edit it. If you're building a program where your API key should be baked in to your consumables (your builds, installers, etc) the API key should be stored in your build system and injected in to the builds during building.
